Job Description
Description
Leidos currently has an opening for an Analytical Chemist to join our research support team in Pittsburgh, PA in supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), a U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) national laboratory ( https://netl.doe.gov ). This is an opportunity to conduct research with world-class scientists and engineers using state of the art equipment, contributing to new areas of applied research to enhance the nation's energy security and protect the environment for future generations.

The U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory is a multi-disciplinary, scientific and technical-oriented national laboratory. NETL produces technological solutions for America's energy challenges to support home-grown energy initiatives, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans. Highly skilled men and women at three NETL research sites - Albany, OR, Morgantown, WV, and Pittsburgh, PA - conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE's mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States.

This position will support a new effort within NETL's Point Source Capture portfolio to identify the secondary air emissions byproducts of carbon dioxide capture processes using solvent-based absorption, as DOE seeks to understand ways to measure, monitor and quantify minor but potentially harmful degradation byproducts for environmental justice purposes. The position will also support the identification and quantification of degradation byproducts that remain and build up in the solvent. The researcher will participate in research activities including developing new analytical methods and participating in field studies, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary and international team of research scientists and engineers.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Perform collaborative experimental research at NETL Pittsburgh to:
    • Operate and become an expert resource in proton transfer reaction - time of flight - mass spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS) and liquid chromatography - quadrupole time of flight - mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS).
    • Develop analytical methods in collaboration with NETL researchers and the instrument manufacturer in support of the development of a mobile air monitoring system.
    • Identify amine degradation compounds that result from laboratory-scale solvent degradation tests.
    • Perform routine maintenance, instrument calibration of the relevant analytical instruments and coordinate needed troubleshooting efforts.
  • Collaborate with the principal investigator (PI), other researchers, engineering and support staff to accomplish project-related tasks.
  • This position will eventually require field travels (up to 20%) for collecting samples, which might entail driving long distances with a trailer housing analytical equipment, plus the possibility of some international travel.
  • Disseminate research results through presentations in relevant scientific forums, and/or publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals,

Required Education, Experience & Other:
  • A PhD degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or related fields of study.
  • 2+ years prior experience performing experiments utilizing mass spectrometry, and demonstrated understanding in interpreting mass spectrometry data for unknown samples.
  • Experience developing new analytical methods for product identification.
  • Must be able to meet the requirement for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.
  • A proven track record of publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals, as well as experience in presenting results at relevant scientific forums.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% for collecting samples, which might entail driving long distances with a trailer housing analytical equipment, plus the possibility of some international travel.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Independent researcher with experience of managing multiple research projects in a laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrates a track record of close collaboration with multiple researchers, internally or externally, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and serving as technical resource within a research group.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for technical and general audiences.
  • Experience in running an LC-QTOF-MS including results analysis and interpretation.
  • Experience in measuring and quantifying degradation products in solvents and to devise experiments for doing so.
  • Knowledge of the design and operation of solvent-based CO2 capture systems.
  • Experience in operating and analyzing solvents and emissions from a pre-pilot or pilot scale solvent-based CO2 capture system.
  • Experience with organic chemical synthesis of new compounds.

Salary Range for this position: $95K to $105K
Original Posting Date: 2024-06-06While subject to change based on business needs, Leidos reasonably anticipates that this job requisition will remain open for at least 3 days with an anticipated close date of no earlier than 3 days after the original posting date as listed above.
