Leidos' Defense Sector has an opening for a Director of Software Engineering to support our operation within the sector. This is a key role responsible for creating, growing, mentoring, and allocating resources (to include workforce planning) within a software organization to ensure that the software engineers have what is necessary to be successful. The team operates as a function of overall Defense Sector Engineering alongside Chief Technology Officers and Solution Architects to ensure technical discrimination, compelling and winning technical solutions that are executable at a profit and coordinated across the broader Leidos enterprise. All positions are housed within the overarching Leidos Office of Technology.
The Director of Software Engineering will represent Software Engineering needs and workforce planning into the Defense Sector Engineering Function, and will be responsible for all aspects of the software engineering discipline and flawless program execution within the Sector.
This position can be supported from either our Reston - VA Headquarters or Huntsville - AL office. Occasional telework may be allowed but selected candidate is expected to work onsite from either location 4 days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Working collaboratively with the Defense Systems Sector Software R&D Director to:
- Transition discriminating SW Development technologies through the "valley of death" in a discriminating way onto programs
- Collaborating on coding and programming for various projects
- Developing and maintaining a Sector level Software Development Plan and Coding Standards
- Defining Common Tools and Processes surrounding SW Development to include DEVSECOPS, Agile, Continuous Integration, etc.
- Approval of SW portion of bids/proposals
- Large acquisition program experience to include experience working the programmatic overlap between Software, Systems and Hardware engineering
- Develop a training strategy for all employees in the SW arena
- Manage budgets and distribution of resources
- Work with Business Area Chief Engineers to tailor plans, processes and tools allowing maximum flexibility while maintaining appropriate engineering rigor
- Participate in the definition and implementation of the long-term engineering strategy aligned to the Sector and Corporate Technology Strategies.
- Collaborating with Sector and Business Area Management and Business Development Leadership to execute our strategies and to further our business goals.
- Active participation in the Capture Process to include writing and reviewing proposal material.
- Development and mentoring of engineering staff to include providing career guidance and professional growth opportunities for high potential employees
- Working engineering initiatives across the Defense Sector and the entire Leidos enterprise, to include other Sectors and functions. These initiatives will focus on engineering, capability, process, technical solutioning, proposal development, and program execution - all to further Leidos engineering discrimination and growth goals with agility, speed, and security.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in software engineering or relevant technical field coupled with 17+ years of software engineering experience. This includes 7 years of supervising / leading large engineering teams or projects.
- Experience in supporting large acquisition programs, large software systems delivery programs, and PoRs.
- Demonstrated people management in multiple management styles and scenarios (matrix, Functional, Projectized, Composite, etc.)
- Engineering domain experience such as:
- Demonstrated proficiency in both embedded/VHDL programming languages and Server-based , Enterprise languages (C++, Java, Python, etc.)
- Technical authority to ensure flawless execution on existing programs,
- Familiar with the following tools: Github, Bugzilla, Docker, JIRA, Asana, Trello, Slack
- Driving discrimination and innovation in the software engineering process and tools in areas like Agile, DEVSECOPS, Modeling and simulation, etc.
- Developing, enforcing, and improving engineering policy, standards, best practices, and management, and
- Familiarity and use of standard program management tools such as Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), Earned Value Management System (EVMS), etc.
- Experience with policy formation, performance management, and best practices in the Defense, Intelligence and/or Space industry
- Strong oral and written communication skills, along with public speaking skills
- Ability to influence and persuade others, as well as handle difficult negotiations requiring a well-developed sense of engineering execution
- Ability to mentor, lead, and promote talent
- Significant experience supporting capture activities to include chairing/participating in Gate Reviews, writing specific sections of proposals, and providing preliminary technical guidance for solutions
- US citizenship is required and able to obtain TS/SCI security clearance or higher
Preferred Qualifications:
- Active TS/SCI Security Clearance or higher is preferred
- Consideration will be given for software engineering Certificates and Courses such as: Certified Computing Professional, SCRUM Master Certification, Professional Software Engineering Master Certification, Certified Professional in Engineering Management

Pay Range: Pay Range $144,300.00 - $260,850.00
