Job Description & Requirements Specialty: Radiation Therapist Discipline: Allied Health Professional Duration: Ongoing Employment Type: Per Diem JOB SUMMARY The Radiation Therapy Technologist position at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for delivering accurate radiation treatments to patients. This role encompasses tasks such as patient setup, treatment verification, equipment maintenance, and ensuring adherence to quality standards. With a focus on effective communication, attention to detail, and the ability to handle a variety of technical duties, the technologist contributes to the treatment of approximately 650 patients annually, displaying physical capabilities for tasks involving lifting and patient assistance. JOB FUNCTIONS Patient Care: • Before the first treatment on any field (initial or boost) the therapist will do the following: • check the calculations sheet and simulation sheet with the record and verify system to assure that all of the entries have been correct. • They will initial the calculation sheet and place an entry in the treatment chart stating that they verified the initial IMPAC set-up and simulation information. • The chart will be checked to make sure that there is a signed consent form, face photo and simulation pictures are present. • They will review the simulation film before the first treatment. • They will record the initial set-up date on treatment parameters sheets and report any deviation to physicist/dosimetry. • Initial port film is to be taken on the first treatment if the treatment blocks are available. Daily Treatment Duties: • Daily treatments are to be done verifying the accuracy of the immobilization, laser lines, marks, and treatment parameters. • They are not to treat any patient without marks or any patient with any question about the treatment set-up unless approved by the chief therapist or physician. • Accurate legible increase for each treatment is to be placed in the chart after the treatment has been delivered. Any corrections are to be made with a single straight line through the incorrect entry and the correct entry is to be written neatly above the incorrect entry. No white out or erasing will be allowed. • The dose in the chart is to be checked with record and verify system daily. • Each chart is to be reviewed weekly by the therapist for diagrams, photographs, weekly separation checks and the total dose column. An entry will be placed as follows in the chart. “Weekly chart check performed by” and then the therapist’s initials. A check mark will also be placed by the total dose column indicating that this total dose has been checked with the VARIS entry. • All patients will have tattoos placed except whole brain patients. This will be done during the second week of treatment as follows: 1) Superior border 2) Central Ray 3) Inferior border. Other duties: • Therapists are to be responsible for scheduling simulations through Kelly as needed for patients under treatment. A notation will be placed in the chart, in pencil, stating the simulation was scheduled and the date and time scheduled. • The on-call therapist is to take patient completion list on Friday and remove the port film jackets and take them for filing. Routine Equipment: • Responsible for daily equipment warm-ups, weekly or bi-weekly. Maintenance/Quality Control: • Machine output checks, patient safety checks and basic machine-maintenance. Simulation: • Must be knowledgeable about simulation procedures including patient set-ups, designing and fabricating patient immobilization and shielding devices, and CT set-ups when necessary. • Assure accurate and complete capture of appropriate procedure and charges daily. Diagnostic Radiography: • Must be familiar with routine diagnostic radiography and procedures to be able to provide back-up coverage for this service at the Cancer Center.
