Geotechnical Engineer to work in a technical support role with highly skilled professionals on diverse project teams in a dynamic environment. We offer engineers the opportunity to work with diverse project teams to support and complete simple and advanced technical evaluations needed to develop geotechnical, seismic, and foundation support requirements for building, infrastructure and energy projects. This is a
full-time position located in our
Portland, ME office.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will:- Compile, reduce, analyze, manage, and report field, instrumentation, and geological data, using spreadsheets, graphs and other tools.
- Support preparation of written geotechnical reports, memoranda, proposals, technical specifications for construction, cost estimates, and other client deliverables.
- Support coordination and completion of subsurface investigations that include but are not limited to test borings, geoprobes, downhole strength testing, surface and downhole geophysical surveys, cone penetrometer explorations, and machine excavated test pits to gather soil and bedrock samples.
- When needed:
- Provide on-site, field engineering support to monitor geotechnical aspects of construction.
- Perform site reconnaissance to observe existing conditions, assess site access for subsurface investigations, and identify important site features.
- Use various geotechnical instrumentation and equipment.
- Adhere to Site Specific Health and Safety Plans prepared for each project site. As applicable, participate in site safety briefings and audits by both sub contractors and Haley & Aldrich.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE- Master's degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or related field.
- PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering is a plus.
- 0 to 5 years of related engineering work experience.
- Experience with calculating static geotechnical and structural resistance of deep foundations (example: driven piles, drilled-in piles, and drilled shafts).
- Experience with soil structure interaction analyses including lateral pile and pile group evaluations, and design of retaining structures.
- Experience with soft ground design and construction, including consolidation settlement and global stability evaluations, preload/surcharge design and performance evaluation using instrumentation data, and determining the need for lightweight fill.
- Experience conducting simplified and advanced site-specific seismic analyses, including liquefaction susceptibility, lateral spreading, and site-specific response analyses.
- Finite element/finite difference modeling is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Computer Skills - Strong computer literacy skills including proficiency in all MS Office software.
- Ability and interest in obtaining professional engineering licensure; has or applies for initial professional certification in their core discipline (EIT or FE)
- Ability to travel to temporary assignments in the Northeast U.S.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Must have a reliable form of transportation to travel to job sites and the office.
- Must comply with the Guiding Principles and Code of Behavior articulated in our Company Charter
- Must comply with company and client Health & Safety protocols.
- OSHA 40-hr. HAZWOPER training preferred but not required.
