Job Summary:Assists nurses and physicians in gastroenterology (GI) specialty procedures.Prepares the room in which the procedure takes place and performs post-procedure clean up and sterilization activities.Performs recordkeeping of physician observations.May also assist in the care of the patient and be responsible for collecting patient biopsies and specimens and keeping the field sterile.Duties and Responsibilities:Cleans, disinfects, and tests scopes or other endoscopic instruments according to manufacturer recommendations and according to facilities policies and documents this high level disinfection in appropriate log book each time a scope is cleaned and disinfected. Maintains attention to detail and comprehends the importance of a properly disinfected scope.It is expected that every scope will be cleaned as if you were the next person to have an endoscopy with that scope.Responsible for assessing endoscope equipment and performing the daily safety checks and providing immediate notification of any equipment problems to the Nurse manager and/or Charge nurse.Provides assistance with skilled nursing care as directed by the RN.Provides assistance as directed by the physician and/or RN with patient care during endoscopy procedures: collects specimens.Assists manager with monthly scope audits as directed.Prepares scope and procedure rooms, including: entering patient data into the GI computer, assembling supplies, and having all necessary equipment needed in order to complete the endoscopic procedure.Assist in housekeeping duties as directed to ensure a safe patient environment and an efficient room turnover including cleaning and disinfecting procedure room and re-stocks unit supplies, accessories, and equipment.Positions or transports patients in accordance with instructions from the RN or physician.Demonstrates knowledge and practice of their role in emergency codes, use of personal protective equipment, understands and follows infection control practices according to hospital policy.Demonstrates knowledge and practice of an unusual occurrence reporting.Completes all competencies in accordance to hospital training.Demonstrates a commitment to competent professional behavior and practice. Engages and seeks in opportunities for professional growth.Performs other duties as assigned.Education and Training:High school diploma or GED required.Licensures/ Certifications:Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification card on hire.Certified Medical assistant, or Certified Nursing assistant, required.Current Endoscopy Technician Certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.Experience:Previous Endoscopy Technician or Sterile Processing Technician experience preferred.
