Description:
This is a part-time, non-benefited position that will work no more than 20 hours per week. Primary hours are Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Occasional Monday and Friday hours as needed.
General Description:
This is a public safety position. The incumbent performs routine tasks to care for impounded animals.
Organization:
The Kennel Attendant is part of Hanover's Career Development Program (CD). The Attendant Ladder has four (4) levels ranging from Kennel Attendant I to Senior Kennel Attendant. Incumbents report to the Animal Facility Supervisor and supervise no staff. Senior level Attendants may provide workflow guidance to lower level Attendants.
Essential Functions:
- Feeds and waters animals.
- Properly cleans and disinfects cages and rooms.
- Routinely and repetitively performs lifting/navigating of at least 50 pounds and maneuvering of animals weighing up to 125 pounds.
- Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks; includes bending, jumping, standing, climbing.
- Monitors the condition of animals.
- Maintains an inventory of supplies.
- Responds to inquiries from the public and staff, including occasional contact with distressed customers.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance during all scheduled work hours.
Working Conditions:
A. Hazards
- Animals: May come in contact with vicious, diseased, and/or sick animals
- Chemicals: Work with many different types of drugs and cleaners
B. Environment
- Kennel: 90% working in animal holding and care areas
- Adoption: 5% working on helping to counsel potential new adoptive owners
- Field: 5% Travel may be necessary to perform essential functions
- Environment must be able to work outside or inside facility daily
- Driving: Drive animals to and from other locations safely and timely
C. Physical Effort
- Animals: Must be able to navigate and control at least 50 pounds and to restrain at least 125 pounds, includes many species of small and large mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, and amphibians
- Equipment: Must be able to operate all light and heavy equipment in accordance with all department standards
D. Non-exempt
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must be able to follow instructions/procedures and to maintain a safe work environment.
- Knowledge of acceptable animal care practices, preferred.
Education, Experience, and Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent required with animal care and behavior training preferred.
- Computer literacy, desired.
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable.
Special Conditions:
- Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting
- Complete Criminal Background Investigation
- Twelve-month probationary period
- Shift Work, including weekends, holidays, and nights
- Work beyond normal work schedule
- Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License
- Pre-employment Physical Examination/Drug Test/Audiometric Testing and repeated in accordance to policy thereafter.
- Must wear uniform, including safety equipment and obtain immunizations
- Essential staff designation
