This position is for a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician I (VERT I) in the Caldwell County Equipment Shop located within Division Eleven. Employees perform semi-skilled small engine, automotive and heavy equipment mechanic work. Performs a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving service, inspection, repair, rebuild & diagnostic instruments and software; may include conducting parts/systems failure analysis & calibration; adjustments and operation of engine analyzers. Work requires experience in welding and steel fabrication/machining. Persons hired into these positions will work in both indoor and outdoor environments and will need to be able to move relatively heavy objects. Ability to operate forklift and pick-up truck as needed. Employees are required to furnish a complete set of mechanics tools.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: - Experience in the repair and replacement of tires

- Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire, balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench
Additional Expectations: Positions require work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc., which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Ability to perform duties of position(s) in accordance with all safety regulations; prepare and maintain paperwork essential to employment, equipment repair, inventory, and service records; understand both written and oral instructions; move parts and materials necessary to repair and maintain equipment; and safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to demonstrate commitment to provide safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals. Safety shoes required. Applicant must either be in possession of a current Class "A" CDL with "N" endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre- employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a Release form ALCDRG-01, Background Statement ALCDRG-06, and Testing Notification Form (ALCDRG-07) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
