Summary
n
The Senior Underwriter is responsible for screening life insurance applications for selection of risks rendering an issue standard, rate, or decline disposition with the guidance of an underwriter or written guidelines. The person will handle the implementation of underwriting policies and procedures related to the processing of new business and underwriting processes as related to other department processes. All duties require identification of medical terminology, identification of prescription medications, use of the Swiss Re Underwriting manual, and evaluation of MIB, phone calls, motor vehicle records, lab results, paramedical exams, and medical records.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
n
· Responsible for screening life insurance applications including trial applications for selection of risks rendering either an issue standard, rate, or reject disposition
n
· Implementation of underwriting policies and procedures related to the processing of new business and other department processes
n
· Implementation of medical guidelines using the Swiss Re Underwriting manual and AIL company notes
n
· MIB code reporting and interpretation of MIB code data
n
· Review and evaluate results of oral saliva tests
n
· Review and evaluate results of agent verification calls and other underwriting phone calls
n
· Review and evaluate motor vehicle records (MVRs)
n
· Review and evaluate prescription (Rx) histories to determine associated health conditions
n
· Review, summarize, and evaluate medical records (APSs)
n
· Review and evaluate paramedical exams and lab results
n
· Respond to customer service inquiries regarding dispositions
n
· Evaluate health information received with add-ons, modifications, and reinstatements
n
· Serve as the underwriting contact for State General Agents for underwriting information and escalated issues
n
· Handle sensitive cases and positive drug screens
n
· Handle aging cases where all information is not received to make a final decision
n
· Handle referrals from other underwriters and screeners
n
· Assist with training of underwriters and screeners
n
· Assist with other underwriting areas as deemed necessary by department management
n

Required Experience
n
Education & Work Experience required:
n
· Some college coursework or bachelor’s degree preferred, however will consider 2-5 years life insurance industry experience in lieu of degree
n
· LOMA 280/281 LOMA 290/291 required; pursuit of FLMI preferred, Other industry courses will be considered
n
· LOMA Underwriting (UND) required
n
· Medical Terminology required
n
· 3+ years working as a Staff Underwriter role or above
n
· A combination of experience and education will be considered
