Senior Hydrogeologist – Ottawa/Kingston
Water Resources · Ottawa, Ontario (Hybrid)
The Opportunity:
Our client is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented and reliable senior hydrogeologist to complement their multidisciplinary team in Eastern Ontario (Ottawa or Kingston). The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and technical skills to plan, execute and manage hydrogeological and terrain analysis studies to support their clients, including land planners and developers (rural lot development for severances/subdivisions on private servicing, PTTW applications, etc.), landfills and other commercial/industrial (e.g., pits and quarries) and municipal sector clients. The successful candidate will also take part in hydrogeological study peer reviews and will participate in multi-disciplinary teams conducting Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) and site remediation. They will be responsible for preparing proposals and budgets, project management, coordination of work teams, preparation and review of quality technical reports. Mentoring junior and intermediate staff as well as engagement in business development activities will also be expected of the successful candidate.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Work as part of an interdisciplinary field and office project team to achieve hydrogeological and environmental project objectives, particularly in the context of industrial, commercial, and residential sites.
Develop, oversee, and implement hydrogeological and/or ESA field programs including borings, supply wells and observation wells, soil, surface and groundwater sampling, and pumping tests for a variety of projects including dewatering (quarrying, construction, mining), private and municipal water supply, environmental impact studies (landfills, industrial sites, mines and others), and environmental site investigations.
Recognize and identify potential hazards and work under strict occupational health and safety protocols.
Coordinate with project teams and oversee compilation and interpretation of hydrogeological data and conceptual site models.
Manage and coordinate small to large scale projects.
Write and review quality technical reports in English (mainly) and French (an asset).
Prepare service proposals, participate in local business development activities and communicate with clients, government entities and other stakeholders.
Qualifications, Education, and Skills:
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in Earth Sciences, Geological, Civil or Environmental Engineering. A Master’s degree in hydrogeology would be an asset.
A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience supporting hydrogeological, ESA and remediation projects for industrial, private, mining and/or government clients.
Knowledge of geology, physical and chemical hydrogeology, environmental site assessments, contaminated site delineation and remediation.
Experience should include groundwater and surface water monitoring and sampling procedures, drilling and installation of observation wells, taking sampling notes, preparing borehole logs, and conducting and analyzing permeability and pumping tests.
Familiarity with current Ontario environmental regulations and guidelines related to waste management, air, groundwater, surface water, soils and/or sediment, excess soils management and well water supply.
Demonstrated experience in technical oversight/peer review, staff mentoring/development and other leadership abilities will be considered an asset for this position.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
The ability to write professional technical reports is paramount.
Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
Ability to travel locally and across the country on an occasional basis.
Ability to work independently in the office and in the field.
Positive attitude, teamwork and problem-solving skills are essential.
