In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
The Consultant, Medication Safety assists in the development, implementation, and monitoring of medication safety programs and initiatives, and is responsible for the development and effectiveness of policies, procedures, and standards for the program, in order to ensure safe and appropriate medication use processes for patients across the organization. Serves as a liaison between pharmacy, nursing, medical staff, and other healthcare professionals, in order to ensure safe and standardized medication use processes. The Consultant provides expertise for the application and integration of evidence-based systems and tools designed to increase the effectiveness, efficiency, safety, and sustainability of health services.
Travel may be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.
Qualifications: Education, Training And Experience Graduation from a recognized nursing program or evidence of an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant. Five (5) years of recent related experience in a clinical setting including: working with the PSLS reporting system; applying quality improvement methodology; data analysis; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Valid BC Driver's license.
Skills And Abilities Demonstrated working knowledge of Island Health's medication processes and technologies.
Extensive knowledge and ability in clinical health care practice, program planning, development, and evaluation.
Leadership skills with ability to support change in a proactive manner.
Ability to develop educational strategies and programs.
Demonstrated ability to provide progressive and innovative approaches to service delivery and program issues.
Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to engage and develop partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders both internal and external to the organization.
Analytical and decision-making skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team; including effectively self-manage schedules and calendars as it relates to deadlines and workload.
A strong commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary teamwork, across programs and services.
Proven modelling of organizational values and principles.
Working knowledge of computer skills to use Microsoft Office software as well as familiarity with internet, data, and email systems.
Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
