About this Position
The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking a Transportation Aide to assist in the transportation of children who are deaf, hard of hearing, visually impaired or blind and who may also have significant cognitive and physical disabilities.
This is an hourly position without benefits limited to 1500 hours per year. The working hours for this position may range from 11:15am - 11:00pm on Fridays and/or from 9:30am - 7:00pm on Sundays. These hours will vary depending upon the length of the route assigned and
transportation needs - typically 16 hours per week.
Job Duties
Responsibilities include:
Assures students are in the appropriate vehicle.
Supervises students at all times during transportation between school and designated transportation sites and surrounding areas while ensuring student safety.
Ensures that students are picked up by designated and approved people.
Ensures the transfer of medications and personal belongings to designated and approved people.
Documents VSDB vehicle and parental arrival times to each stop, medication transfer, behavioral incidents, and the number of students in the vehicle.
Maintains contact with the Student Life Office throughout the home-going/school-going trip.
Consistently manages impartially and politely, while demonstrating good judgment in handling student behaviors.
Works cooperatively and supportively to assist staff in all aspects of bus/vehicle supervision.
Carries out bus supervision tasks.
Operates and maintains GPS devices.
Provides one-to-one assistance to students as needed.
Communicates appropriately with students, families, school, and community personnel.
Maintains contact with the Student Life Office thorough student transportation.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or General Educational Development Certificate, or equivalent level of experience and training.
Current CPR and First Aid certification is required or must be obtained in accordance with school policies.
Proficiency level of "Survival" in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years.
Ability to interact with students in a patient, positive, and sensitive manner in order to provide for their direct care and development.
Ability to carry out personal care and support tasks.
Ability to work independently and follow school policies and procedures.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of personal information
Physical Requirements:
Ability to monitor students in vehicles during transportation to and from school
Ability to help students entering and exiting vehicle and assist with luggage if necessary.
Additional Considerations
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior work or volunteer experience working with children is preferred.
Experience managing behaviors and addressing acute medical needs preferred.
Ability to drive state vehicles (ten-passenger vans, cars, etc.) in order to transport students to and from the school campus as needed is preferred.
Valid Driver's License with driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway and passenger safety or ability to obtain following DMV guidelines preferred.
