General Purpose
The City of Idaho Falls is currently accepting applications for a full-time Electrical Inspector. This position performs a variety of journeyman-level duties related to the inspection of electrical installations in residential and commercial structures. Works under general supervision of the Chief Electrical Inspector.
Essential Functions
Conducts field inspections of electrical installations, appliances, determines conformity to code and issues approval for work progress; instructs contractors in areas of deficiency and recommends remedies; prepares various reports on inspection results.
Makes decisions regarding interpretation of codes and regulations; resolves conflict(s) when possible; reviews and studies codes, laws, and regulations to remain abreast of inspection developments and changes.
Confers with contractors in the design and execution of electrical installations; records inspection date and status of inspection.
Processes hookup requests to Electric Light Division to provide power to construction sites; receives and processes electrical complaints; evaluates problems and identifies alternative solutions; resolves problems to the satisfaction of all concerned.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from a standard senior high school, or GED, and successful completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program, including specialized training obtained through vocational or technical college, correspondence, or in-service training, leading to the acquisition of a journeyman electrician license and certification; AND B. Two (2) years of journeyman-level work experience; OR C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of methods, practices, and procedures involved in construction, installation, maintenance, and operation of a variety of complex electrical installations, equipment, and appliances; thorough knowledge of municipal electrical code, uniform codes and regulations; thorough knowledge of possible defects and faults in electrical wiring and appliances; thorough knowledge of standard testing procedures and devices and effective corrective measures; considerable knowledge of City geography; some knowledge of report writing; some knowledge of standard office procedures and maintenance.
Journeyman skills in electrical wiring and installations.
Ability to detect and locate defective electrical wiring and construction; ability to ascertain state of construction and installation when defects are most easily found and remedied; ability to read and interpret complex blue prints and plan specifications; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to develop effective working relationships with professional contractors, local merchants, City Officials, Supervisors, and the public.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid State of Idaho journeyman electrician license.
Must possess a valid Idaho driver's license.
Must become a certified International Code Council Building Inspector within one (1) year from date of hire.
Must become a certified IAEI Electrical Inspector ICC Electrical Inspector within one (1) year from date of hire.
Final candidate may be subject to a background check.
Work Environment
Tasks Functions of the position generally performed in an controlled environment, but subject to all seasonal and weather extremes. Various levels of mental application required, i.e.; memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, creative problem solving. Works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Continuous use of motor skills.
