Job Description: Lowboy Driver
Job Overview:
A Lowboy Driver is responsible for safely and efficiently transporting heavy construction equipment, such as bulldozers, excavators, and other oversized machinery, to and from job sites for a heavy highway construction company. This position requires a skilled individual who is experienced in handling oversized loads, operating heavy-duty trucks with lowboy trailers, and ensuring compliance with all state and federal transportation regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
· Safely load, secure, and transport heavy construction equipment using a lowboy trailer to various job sites.
· Ensure equipment is properly secured and balanced on the trailer to prevent shifting or damage during transit.
· Plan and follow the safest and most efficient routes, considering road conditions, weight restrictions, and permits.
· Adhere to all DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations, including maintaining an accurate log of driving hours, inspecting equipment before and after trips, and obtaining any necessary oversized load permits.
· Conduct regular inspections of the truck, trailer, and load to ensure all safety protocols are met, including the proper use of warning flags, lights, and signage for oversized loads.
· Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, project managers, and job site supervisors regarding delivery schedules, delays, and other relevant information.
· Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of the truck and trailer, including checking tire pressure, fluid levels, and brakes. Report any mechanical issues to the maintenance team.
· Complete and maintain all required paperwork, such as delivery logs, trip records, and vehicle inspection reports.
Qualifications:
· Minimum 2 years of experience operating a lowboy trailer, preferably in a heavy highway or construction environment.
· Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with a clean driving record.
· Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, particularly concerning oversized and overweight loads.
· Prior experience working in the highway construction or heavy civil industry.
· Ability to operate a variety of heavy construction equipment for loading and unloading.
· Familiarity with GPS and other navigation tools.
Physical Requirements:
· Must be able to lift 50+ pounds.
· Ability to sit for long periods and handle prolonged driving hours.
· Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
Working Conditions:
· This position involves working outdoors in all weather conditions and driving long distances between construction sites.
· May require weekend work or extended hours, depending on project deadlines.
