Job description : Computing and Communications Services (CCS) is the central IT department at the University of Guelph, providing core IT services and technology solutions to the U of G community. Reporting to the Manager, Systems Management, the Senior Analyst, Database Services will play a critical role supporting the University’s Database systems and Information Management processes and implement solutions to meet the needs of our University of Guelph communities and partners. The successful candidate will be tasked with:

  • Installing, configuring, and maintaining SQL Server databases
  • Performing database backup and recovery, patching, and security administration
  • Monitoring and optimizing database performance, availability, and capacity
  • Developing and implementing data migration, replication, and integration strategies
  • Troubleshooting and resolving database issues and providing technical support
  • Developing and maintaining database documentation, policies, and procedures
  • Participating in change management processes and ensuring compliance with IT standards and best practices
  • Collaborating with other IT teams and stakeholders on database design, development, and testing
  • CCS projects including determining resource requirements, assigning project tasks, and reporting progress to management and/or partners and clients.

Requirements of the position include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Information technology and a minimum of 5-6 years of related database administration experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience and demonstrated technical knowledge and proficiency with:
  • Managing Microsoft SQL Server 2019 and above
  • Administering Microsoft Windows servers
  • Using Transact-SQL to write transactions and stored procedures
  • Automation of common Windows Server and SQL Server tasks using PowerShell
  • SQL Server performance tuning and optimization
  • OS and database Monitoring and troubleshooting tools
  • Backup, restoration, and recovery procedures
  • Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work effectively with both business clients and technical team members
  • Strong technical writing skills and a demonstrated commitment to documentation
  • Experience working closely with developers and an understanding of their workflows and processes
  • Expert knowledge of current and emerging trends in database systems, including experience with cloud technologies would be an asset
  • Experience with change management processes in an enterprise environment
  • Excellent analytical ability and thorough understanding of large-scale information technology applications and information management practices
  • Ability to carry out occasional maintenance outside of regular business hours, as required
  • Certification in SQL Server, with certifications in Cloud and/or Windows OS administration strongly preferred
