The main function of the Agronomist is to manage the seed supply, monitor crops, mentor growers, and is a liaison for crop insurance and the AVG Grower Board.
This position will be responsible for monitoring crops and advising of planting and harvest schedules to ensure crop targets are met.
This position reports to the Plant Manager and is responsible for supervising the Crop Supervisor and seasonal field technicians.
THE ROLE:
Crop Insurance
- Represents the company in development of crop insurance programs for the grower base;
- Attends all disputes involving the tripartite group e.g. growers, crop insurance, and the company to determine liabilities of unharvested acres/bypass;
Seed
- Makes recommendations for seed supply and acreage requirements;
- Contacts with seed vendors to evaluate seed performance;
- Arranges and monitors seed trials;
Growers
- Leads the plant in grower negotiations;
- Visits with growers for contracting acres and follows up on growing conditions throughout the year as well as scheduling planting and harvest dates;
- Ensures grower records are entered on database;
- Finalizes grower returns;
Harvest
- Stays in touch with the plant continuously to ensure awareness of expected quality;
- Assists with pretests and attends daily production meetings in person or via phone to help set priorities for the next 24-30 hours;
- Monitors crops for maturity and any developments;
- Schedules field harvest;
- Consults with growers on when to water, spray and how to maintain crops to optimize yield;
Other
- Budget control;
- Lead contact in Sysco and other customer audits.
PROFILE:
- Post-secondary with a focus in Agriculture;
- CCA or certification in progress considered an asset;
- Must possess workplace essential skills and excellent interpersonal skills;
- Proficient spoken and written English;
- Ability to prioritize tasks according to time-sensitive deadlines;
- Proficient in Excel and G Suite;
- Class 5 license with acceptable driver's abstract;
- Ideally minimum 3 years experience in similar role.
