About the Role:

Reporting to the Senior Purchasing Manager the Purchasing Manager will be responsible for purchasing spend for the Consumables category of goods ($45M spend). Provide support, guidance and direct project work of the Purchasing team.

What you will be doing:

  • Responsible for RFQ’s on Consumables items and overall buyer of Consumables category (includes initial orders, backup to Blanket and Release orders).
  • Develop and maintain relationship with Suppliers to ensure appropriate quote approval and dispute resolution and maintenance of required product specifications. Review, monitor and maintain contract files for Consumables Vendors.
  • Coordinate product management with the R & D (Research and Development), Sales and Marketing groups. Work with NPD on projects to coordinate samples, organize documentation, set up new item codes, determine min/max levels and place initial orders.
  • Manage supplier and consumables qualifications for cost savings projects & marketing product launches.
  • Negotiation of vendor price increase/decrease notices through analysis of spend and cost impact to raw material or foreign exchange market fluctuations.
  • Manage the Consumables inventory disposal by writing-off delisted and expired items. 7. Support build, test and implementation of D365 and ongoing support after go-live.
  • Provide back up to sales and finance to support price increases for major customers.
  • Responsible for Category Management and Savings Projects management (including vendor and SKU rationalization, new item sourcing and category strategy recommendations).
  • Manage the cost savings process through the cost savings report tracker and provide monthly report of results.
  • Ultimately responsible for PPV (Purchase Price Variance) – the difference between standard cost and purchase price of the Consumables category.
  • Consumables item and vendor setup and maintenance in ERP (Axapta).
  • Assist management team across different departments through one-on-one and cross functional teams to support company programs. Support at Holdco level (including Mississauga, St. Francois, Eden Valley Poultry).
  • Period-end and Year-end support to Finance group including audit.
  • Support BRC audit and documentation for Consumables at both Brampton and Mississauga locations.
  • Provides overall management of a large team or business area and includes management of individuals indirectly through subordinate supervisors or managers. Assist the Buyers with placing release orders and expediting orders as required.
  • Establish goals and priorities and manage the activities and work of subordinates. Evaluate their performance by providing formal and informal feedback to ensure that all work within a specific area is carried out in an efficient manner and in accordance with set individual targets.
  • Responsible for all aspects of Human Resources functions for team including hiring, onboarding, performance management and disciplinary matters.
  • Develop team capabilities through continued on-the-job and formal training opportunities and coaching.
  • Prepare, recommend and manage a budget for the direct area of responsibility (Consumables standard costing) by conducting analysis and preparing data to support requested budget.
  • Monitor the financial performance of area of responsibility against approved budget so that areas of unsatisfactory performance are identified and rectified promptly and potential performance improvement opportunities are capitalized on.
  • Prepare, recommend and assist with a budget for Utilities (hydro, gas, water) by conducting analysis and preparing data to support requested budget.
  • Assist with a budget for the Purchasing Department including training, capital and savings projects.


What you will bring:

  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in the food industry, some management experience preferred.
  • Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma in Supply Chain, Business Administration, Finance or equivalent
  • Certification or designation in Supply Chain Management (e.g. CSCMP) is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of food and meat plant regulatory standards (CFIA, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of GMP, HACCP, BRC, food safety & quality
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure in a fast paced environment while organizing and prioritizing workload.
  • General computer skills (e.g. MS Office) and advanced ERP skills
  • Practical Accounting knowledge
  • Knowledge of process improvement tools Education and Certification Requirements
