Office of Exceptional Learning JOB PURPOSE
Under limited supervision, actively supports the assigned school(s) to ensure that a strong commitment to improving academic and social achievement of students with disabilities. Collaborates with appropriate individuals so that the educational needs of students with disabilities are appropriately addressed and ensures compliance with district procedures as well as applicable federal and state laws. Reports to the Coordinator of Special Services.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists in the development, implementation and coordination of the District's policies and programs for students with disabilities.
Serves as the liaison between the Office of Special Services and school-based administrators on issues related to special education programming.
Assists general and special education staff with the implementation of effective instruction program including teaching, coaching and collaboration for inclusive services.
Collaborates and consults with special education teachers, school staff, district instructional staff to address instructional issues for students with disabilities.
Develops, demonstrates, and implements academic and behavioral evidence based strategies/interventions for students with disabilities.
Identifies and assists teachers with developing accommodations and modifications for teaching and learning.
Attends IEP meetings for students where some special circumstances / legal issues exist.
Conducts classroom observations for collecting academic and/or behavior data.
Ensures all teachers have knowledge of and understanding of IEP accommodations, modifications, and behavior intervention plans.
Develops and models collaborative lesson planning between regular and special education teachers.
Provides training, assistance and support to special education teachers in classroom based assessments to use data in making instructional decisions and progress monitoring.
Keeps abreast of local, state, and national developments in special education programming, curriculum and instruction, and policies and procedures.
Develops and facilitates professional development opportunities for special education staff.
Provides training for administrators, teachers, therapists, other departments on procedures, legal issues, interventions and research-based programs and services; provides training and workshops for parents as needed.
Provides school and system level support for analyzing discipline data and identifying effective strategies.
Assists in the preparation of special reports.
Monitors, on a regularly scheduled basis, confidential folders and IEPs to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
Maintains confidentiality and organization of records through observable procedures consistent with state and federal guidelines.
Assists with program or staff evaluations as requested.
Monitors the effective use of para-professionals in assigned schools.
Monitors IEP goals/objectives to ensure that instruction matches the IEP requirements.
Monitors related service personnel to ensure that appropriate services are provided.
Achieves goals that may be outlined in various reports, strategic plan or audit.
Ensures that students with disabilities are receiving a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.
Effectively uses, and trains building staff to use, the district's electronic IEP system.
Informs site administration of special education concerns/issues that may be supervisory in nature.
Monitors the provision of a free appropriate education in the least restrictive environment based on an individualized education program for each student with disabilities served and IEP meetings as required.
Stays current on developments in the areas of autism, special education policies, regulations, curriculum and instruction.
Assists parents in problem solving and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to support the development and implementation of their child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment such as a computer, printer, fax machine, copier, calculator, telephone, etc.; uses clerical, copier, computer supplies.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor,
subordinates, Superintendent, other District administrators and staff, school administrators and teachers,
Board members, State Department of Education personnel, visiting artists, various committees, parents, students and the general public.
Attends training, conferences, workshops, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending and receiving faxes, entering and retrieving computer data, etc.
Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a Master's degree in special education, speech pathology, or related special services field, supplemented by two to three years of experience in special education administration, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid S.C. Teaching Certificate. Must possess a valid state driver's license.
