Overview:

Plan, develop, organize, implement, and evaluate the Religious Ministries programs in accordance with high quality professional chaplaincy practice and in accordance with the mission, goals and objectives of Yale-New Haven Hospital. Execute the chaplaincy programs to insure maximum benefits to the patients/families and staff of the hospital by well-defined delegation of responsibilities in general areas and in specific assignments. Respnsible for the overall direction, leadership, coordination, collaboration and evaluation of activities in direct clinical services and accredited educational programs. Provides leadership and administrative support to the hospital Adult Ethics Committee and serves as liaison with various professional and community clergy groups.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Direct the delivery of spiritual care services to patients, families and Hospital staff of many faiths and no particular faith.
  • 2. Develop and maintain high quality standards of professional chaplaincy practice. Confers with appropriate staff, hospital administration, the medical staff and the directors of other professional departments in planning chaplaincy participation in hospital services. Ensures that all patient care responsibilities will be preformed consistent with age-specific criteria.
  • 3. Keep abreast of current standards in the chaplaincy field and provide for periodic review, evaluation and modification of chaplaincy programs to meet the needs of the different age groups, cultural and faith groups served in the Hospital.
  • 4. Provide leadership and administrative support to the Hospital Adult Ethics Committee, and participate in other ad hoc and standing committees and task forces in the Hospital and community.
  • 5. Develop, administer and coordinate policies and procedures for the Religious Ministries Department which can be communicated to staff, the Hospital, and community in order to provide effective and efficient, well-coordinated programs of chaplaincy services. Participate in formulating the programs and policies of the Hospital organization on the administrative and clinical levels.
  • 6. Oversee the ongoing accreditation of the department to provide high quality Clinical Pastoral Education programming per The Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. standards.
  • 7. Provide a staff development plan to meet the learning needs of staff, thus enabling them to give the best possible spiritual care in this hospital context. Such plans include orientation of new staff members, supervision, planning and providing leadership for seminiars and workshops, and enabling staff to take advantage of opportunities outside the hosptial.
  • 8. Prepare budget and plans for presentation and interpretation of budgetary requirements to administration and other funding sources. Oversee the deparment's annual operations within the approved budget limits.
  • 9. Provide for and teach students at the Yale Schools of Medicine and Nursing in chaplaincy services and ethics education.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION

Bachelor's Degree and Graduate Theology Degree (Master of Divinity or its equivalent); also ordination or certification in Religious Vocation; also endorsement for institutional ministry by ecclesiastical authority; also board certification as a professional chaplain (by The Association of Professional Chaplains or The National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or The National Association of Jewish Chaplains, which requires in addition to the above, 4 units or 1600 hours of Clinical Pastoral Education by ACPE, Inc.); also certification as a Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor by The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE certificaion requires an additional 2 or more units of Supervisory CPE, 2-4 years of supervised teaching experience and the demonstration (via written theory papers, practice presentations and committee appearances) of professional, pastoral, educational and conceptual competence.

EXPERIENCE

Five to ten years of hospital chaplaincy experience including: direct pastoral care with the sick and their caregivers, direct responsibility for Clinical Pastoral Education, and some intra- and inter- departmental administrative experience.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Demonstrated emotional and spiritual maturity sufficient to provide leadership in complex multi-disciplinary and multi-faith teriary care clinical settings.

Additional Information:

CPE certified, knowledge of Pastoral Care in Healthcare setting. Experience managing others.
