Job Description
POSITION TITLE: Special Education Teacher
REPORTS TO: Principal &/or Director of Special Education
BASIC FUNCTION: Performs those duties required by District, State, and Federal regulations of special education teachers. To lead students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation. To help students grow physically and mental into productive citizens.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: The terms of employments are designated by the contract.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district staff
  • Arrives to work at the assigned hour and does not leave before the assigned time
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with other staff members, parents, students, and with administration
  • Accepts assistance, advice and guidance from people responsible for supervising his/her performance, and makes a concerted effort toward improving or refining skills
  • Keeps in confidence information that has been obtained in the course of professional service, unless disclosure serves professional purpose or is required by law
  • Evaluate student progress on a regular basis
  • Diagnoses the learning needs of each student, and prescribes individual IEP's to meet those needs.
  • Acts as a resource person with other teachers and parents to promote understanding of special education student needs, and to provide assistance in working with disabled students
  • Is familiar with and implements due process and procedures, and keeps proper documentation
  • Assimilates and applies suggestions from related service personnel
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings
  • Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and board policy
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others
  • Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods
  • Work with students who have challenges with mobility. This would include lifting, positioning and moving the child from place to place for the proper use of gross motor equipment, such as standers and to and from a wheelchair, changing table, bed, on and off a bus etc.
  • Work with the management of student behavior when they are exhibiting inappropriate and/or physically forceful behaviors. This may include assisting students who are at risk of harming themselves or others through implementation of Safe Crisis Management.
  • Perform administration of medication and other health services such as tube feeding and catheterization, as instructed by a health professional.
  • Regular and punctual attendance
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Special Education due process
  • Current student information system
  • Current research for the purpose of competent identification of special education students
  • A variety of instructional techniques
ABILITY TO:
  • Practically apply instructional techniques in the class setting
  • Work cooperatively as an interdisciplinary team member
  • Communicate effectively both in writing and orally
  • Complete all student due process paperwork
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing
  • Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations
  • Requires bending, squatting , crawling, climbing, reaching
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light to heavy weights
  • Assist students with self-care, including diapering, toileting, bathing, dressing and etc

EVALUATION: Annual development of Professional Growth Plan. Annual evaluation of job performance by supervisor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's Degree in Special Education (VI)
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid Kentucky Teacher of the Visually Impaired Certificate
