Why USAA? Responsible for leading a team in setting USAA Life Company underwriting policy in support of the Chief Life Underwriter and other senior executives in setting USAA Life Company underwriting policy. Assures policies, guidelines and risk classification procedures are aligned with expected mortality and morbidity performance. Accountable for assisting the Chief Life Underwriter in overseeing and facilitating the ongoing transformation of the underwriting process to create sustainable and delightful member experiences, focused on reducing cycle time, eliminating process friction, and optimizing automated underwriting decision-making. Provides day-to-day supervision and management support for the Life Company underwriting department. The Opportunity Tasks: Creates and provides oversight and supervision of, internal underwriting operating guidelines and procedures in support of mortality management policy. Establishes medical underwriting policies and practices in conjunction with Chief Life Underwriter and Medical Directors. Provides executive thought leadership on complex and unique underwriting cases and contestable claims. Accountable for overseeing and conducting ad-hoc mortality and risk classification trend analyses. As a project sponsor for the underwriting innovation journey, provides oversight and is accountable for delivering defined benefits while staying within budget and timeline parameters. Provides creative input and applies sound underwriting judgment in consideration of new and emerging technologies to potentially transform the underwriting process. Leads the development of the Life Underwriting Policy team toward optimization of automated underwriting decision-making. Accountable for monitoring existing underwriting automation platform for performance and controls and identifies enhancements to improve the overall member experience. Responsible for validating underwriting rule changes to underwriting system to ensure adherence to Life Company and/or USAA risk tolerance. Ensures compliance with legislation and regulation regarding life insurance underwriting policies, practices and procedures. Represents the underwriting discipline in new product development initiatives. Collaborates, builds and maintains relationships with reinsurance and key business partners to promote a culture of continuous improvement, solve business challenges and meet business goals. Builds and leads a team of underwriting professionals responsible for results delivery through recruiting, development, retention, coaching and performance management. Acts on behalf of the Chief Life Underwriter in his/her absence. Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures. Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree. Minimum Experience: 10 years of life insurance underwriting experience with in-depth understanding of medical, non-medical and financial underwriting principles and practices. 4 years of people leadership experience in a life insurance underwriting function to include building, managing and/or developing high-performing teams. Executive-level business acumen in the areas of underwriting policy, innovation and life insurance industry practices, emerging trends, major issues and regulatory considerations. Extensive experience in evaluating new underwriting data sources with an emphasis on electronic health data. Experience developing and utilizing accelerated underwriting processes, including the use of data analytics and third-party evidence providers (e.g., prescription history). Deep technical knowledge of underwriting systems. Experience with underwriting rules engine and rules management. $10,000,000 or more of Life Insurance Approval authority. Experience collaborating with key resources and stakeholders, influencing decisions and managing work to achieve strategic goals. Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU). You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this position is: $163,880.00-294,980.00. Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors. Long Term Incentive Plan: Cash payment for Executive level roles only, representing a cash payment which is both time and performance based.
