General Counsel - Mid-Size Commercial General Contractor


Position Overview:

We are seeking a motivated and entrepreneurial construction lawyer looking to broaden their career in a business-centered role that extends beyond legal responsibilities. This position is designed for an individual eager to blend legal acumen with business strategy, leadership, and influence over the company's direction and growth.


The role offers a distinctive opportunity for a construction lawyer who wants to evolve into a comprehensive business partner, working closely with the executive team to drive the company’s success.


Key Responsibilities:


Legal & Compliance (50%)

  • Provide legal counsel to the executive team on construction law, contracts, labor law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts to ensure alignment with company objectives and legal requirements.
  • Manage legal matters related to litigation, risk management, and intellectual property.
  • Oversee compliance with local, state, and federal laws, particularly those within the construction industry.


Strategic Leadership & Business Development (50%)

  • Collaborate with the executive team on strategic decision-making, combining legal expertise with business insights to drive company growth.
  • Shape the strategic direction by identifying opportunities for innovation across the organization.
  • Strengthen industry partnerships and client relationships, leveraging legal expertise to enhance the company’s standing and expand expert witness services.
  • Develop and execute strategies for growing client relationships and exploring new business opportunities.
  • Lead educational workshops and seminars on construction law to position the company as a thought leader in the industry.


Candidate Criteria:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the California State Bar.
  • 5+ years of legal experience, with a focus on construction law.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, capable of building robust client and internal relationships.
  • A strategic mindset with a dedication to driving business growth and enhancing organizational processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
