Job Description / Essential Elements: DEFINITION Under supervision, keeps assigned rooms, buildings, office spaces and other areas clean and orderly; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Under supervision, the individuals in this class work individually or as part of a crew; perform tasks of a routine and/or repetitive nature which are easily learned; assist in the performance of skilled tasks under immediate supervision or performs routine unskilled or semi-skilled work with relative independence.
This class is distinguished from the next higher class of Custodian I - Lead Person or Custodian II by the absence of supervisory responsibility; also work assigned requires less skill and tasks are more easily learned.
OCCUPATIONAL GROUP Classified (Custodial)
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Cleans classrooms, restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeterias, gymnasiums, offices and related facilities; sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors, vacuums carpets; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; empties and cleans waste receptacles; refills soap, towel and tissue dispensers.
2. Washes windows, walls, tables, benches; moves and arranges furniture and equipment; sets up buildings and rooms for meetings, special or routine events.
3. Makes minor non-technical repairs, replaces lights; picks up paper and other debris on grounds and walks; disposes of refuse.
4. Raises and lowers flags.
5. Locks and unlocks doors and gates.
6. Informs supervisor if supplies or repairs are needed; stores supplies.
7. Spot cleans and shampoos carpets; participates in the thorough cleaning and restoration of a school plant.
8. Reports unsafe conditions in school areas; maintains security of school property.
9. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Knowledge of: - Supplies, tools, electrical cleaning equipment and methods used in custodian work.
Ability to: - Quickly learn the schedules, procedures and tools used in custodial work;
- Work well with those contacted in the course of the work day; willingness to cooperate with the faculty, students and other workers;
- Perform general custodial and elementary maintenance work;
- Perform heavy manual labor; know how to lift heavy materials;
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
EXPERIENCE Some work experience involving the performance of duties similar to those listed above.
EDUCATION Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions at a level required for successful job performance.
