Salary: $23.16-32.35/Hour (*Salary includes 12% Recruitment & Retention Stipend) Location: Home-based, State vehicle supplied Opening Date : November 26, 2024 Closing Date: Until Filled The DPFR Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Elevator and Tramway Safety Program needs elevator inspectors to protect the public health, safety and welfare. Elevator inspectors work independently throughout the state to:
- inspect newly installed elevators before then can be used by the public,
- to inspect elevators and tramways that have been modified in any way before they can be used by the public,
- to investigate complaints and accidents caused by elevators and tramways , and
- to ensure that elevators and tramways are inspected periodically by their owners pursuant to Maine law.
Primary responsibilities include: - Inspects elevators and tramways in order to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, and standards.
- Registers, certifies, suspends, or revokes certification of elevators and tramways in order to ensure adherence to laws and rules and to ensure public safety.
- Records type, dimensions, age, condition, location, and inspection dates on all elevators and tramways in order to document equipment history.
- Examines and certifies elevator mechanics and inspectors and tramway inspectors in order to qualify elevator and tramway operation and maintenance personnel.
- Drafts and recommends legislation and regulations for tramway and elevator inspection, certification, and safety standards in order to ensure public safety and program effectiveness.
- Reviews weekly activity reports in order to prepare a weekly summary for management.
- Testifies at court hearings in order to provide expert testimony concerning violations
Skills or knowledge required: - Knowledge of investigative principles, practices, and procedures.
- Knowledge of elevator and tramway laws, rules, regulations, codes, and inspection methods.
- Knowledge of machinery, electricity, motors, gearing, elevators, and ski lift devices.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to administer examinations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to testify in court.
- Ability to write reports and maintain records.
Minimum qualifications: Two (2) years experience inspecting elevators and tramways.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).
Certification as issued by the Qualified Elevator Inspector Association.
