Salary
- Support Salary Scale Grade S09: $24.78 per hour; starting
Under the Fair Labor and Standards Act this position is non-exempt from overtime. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Frederick County Public School System. Please see linked salary scale for the full range.
Role
The School Bus Driver drives students safely to and from the various schools on regular routes and school-sponsored field trips.
Note - All bus drivers start out as sub status bus drivers. Bus Drivers can apply for benefited routes as they become available once final certification is successfully completed.
Essential Functions
Reporting directly to the Transportation Manager, the School Bus Driver performs the following duties:
- Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality on the job.
- Transports students safely to and from various schools on regular routes directed by the Transportation department.
- Maintain discipline of students on board while remaining a defensive safe driver and reports severe misbehavior to school administrators as needed.
- Drives safely and responsibly and maintains a positive, pleasant, and safe environment for all students.
- Interact in a positive and professional manner with parents, school administrators and staff.
- Perform as a team player in assisting or serving as the bus assistant whenever necessary.
- Transports wheelchair students assisting with loading/unloading, use of wheelchair lifts, and has knowledge of wheelchair securements.
- Maintain confidential medical logs and attendance records for special needs students.
- Submits all paperwork and required forms by requested due date.
- Responsible for keeping assigned bus clean, inside and out (weather permitting) and that maintenance is performed as needed.
- Attend all in-service/other training meetings as required.
- Performs school bus evacuation drills as directed.
- Capable of learning and understanding the mechanical knowledge of the school bus in order to complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections. Note: This is required with Commercial Driver's License requirements which include filling out a Pre-trip Inspection Log.
- Maintain a clean and professional appearance.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Manager.
Required Qualifications
- Successfully complete pre-service instructional training course as required pursuant to COMAR 13a.06.06.
- Ability to read/write the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public and students. To understand traffic signs and signs in the English language.
- No more than two (2) current points on driving record and a satisfactory past driving record, as determined by the Director of Transportation.
- Ability to use and maintain FCPS email account.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Five (5) years of driving experience, during which time you held a valid driver's license.
- Meet all Motor Vehicle Licensing requirements for a commercial driver's license (CDL) Class B with a passenger and school bus endorsement.
- Satisfactorily pass the appropriate medical examination for school vehicle drivers as stated in COMAR 11.19.05.01.
- Satisfactorily pass the appropriate medical examinations for school vehicle drivers prior to each anniversary date.
- Receive a negative controlled substance test as required under COMAR 13a.06.07 paragraph .09
- Maintain a driving record in accordance with COMAR 13A.06.07, paragraph .06
- Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 lbs. with frequent climbing.
- Ability to drive any size or type school bus in the fleet and in various weather conditions.
- Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
Current CDL holder and previous school bus driving experience.
