JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision, operates school buses on assigned scheduled passenger routes transporting students and school groups to and from schools, events, and on special field trips, in accordance with requirements of school transportation schedules and traffic laws, and performs a variety of other related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: - Drives a school bus over any designated route according to established time schedules.
- Picks up and discharges students at designated stops, communicating with teachers and parents, as appropriate.
- Performs appropriate child check safety procedures.
- Assists students with disabilities to board or leave the bus.
- Transports students on special educational trips and to athletic events.
- Supervises the conduct of students while on a school bus or on a school campus.
- Administers first aid as appropriate.
- Cleans, services, and performs daily safety checks on assigned vehicle.
- Checks vehicles for proper maintenance and safety.
- Keeps trip records and makes simple reports.
- Performs overtime driving duties as assigned.
- Picks up and delivers vehicles and materials as assigned.
Marginal Duties - Performs simple clerical and inventory duties as assigned.
- Performs a variety of non-bus driving duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education and Experience: One year of experience in the operation of a motor vehicle. Some experience working with school-aged children is desirable.
LICENSE: Must possess and maintain a valid Class A or Class B California Driver License with a passenger endorsement and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate.
CERTIFICATE: Must possess and maintain a valid School Bus Driver Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol. Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR certificate or pass the California Highway Patrol First Aid exam.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of :
- Safe bus driving practices.
- Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, California Code of Regulations, and the California Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.
- First aid practices.
- Child check safety procedures.
Ability to: - Drive a school bus safely and efficiently.
- Supervise the conduct of students.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Learn and carry out prescribed safety checks.
- Keep simple records.
- Work cooperatively with students, parents, school officials, other employees, and law enforcement personnel.

The examination may consist of an evaluation of training and experience, multiple choice, performance, and oral/technical exams. Outside and district candidates will be placed on one ranked list, with eligible permanent district employees receiving five seniority points which will be added to their final scores.

HIRING PROCEDURES : Garden Grove is a merit system (civil service) school district. Employment and promotions are based upon merit, fitness and qualifications. The person selected to fill any regular position will be from among the top three ranks on the eligibility list approved by the Personnel Commission. All regular employees will serve a six (6) month probation.
EXAMINATION FOR TUBERCULOSIS : Proof of freedom from active tuberculosis must be furnished prior to employment and must be based upon an intradermal Mantoux tuberculin skin test completed within the last 60 days.
FINGERPRINTING : All new employees will be fingerprinted.
