MEDICAL ASSISTANT/NURSES STATION REPORTS TO: MEDICAL ASSISTANT TEAM LEAD RESPONSIBLE AND ACCOUNTABLE FOR: General cleanliness, stocking of patient care rooms and procedure room. Acting as liaison between the provider and the patient. Rendering nursing care to patients in the office setting or procedure room under the supervision of the Director of Operations. Making every effort to remain a flexible cooperative and supportive member of the Office staff. Care and maintenance of all clinic equipment and accessories. PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE: Medical Assistant in the State of Pennsylvania Minimum of two (2) years previous office experience preferred. Demonstrates clinical expertise in gastroenterology nursing. Current BLS certification Participation in ongoing continuing education Ability to deal compassionately, professionally, and courteously with patients, their families, providers, and fellow staff TYPICAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS: Full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination Extensive periods of standing or walking Bending, lifting, and carrying Normal color perception and corrected visual acuity and hearing to normal range Involvement with management, providers, staff, and patients and their families TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Clean environment in a gastroenterology physicians’ office. Exposure to communicable diseases Exposure to chemicals common to a clinical setting (formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde) DUTIES AND TASKS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: Render nursing care to patients in the office setting as well as procedure setting under the supervision of the Director of Operations Cares for and maintains all capsule endoscopy equipment and accessories Cleans and stocks clinical areas as well as procedure room Assists provider during procedures (Solesta, Hemorrhoidal Banding, anoscopy) Spanish translation services, as needed Takes and records weight, pulse and blood pressure of each RGI patient Reviews patient’s current medication, dosage and dosage schedule on each visit and records on medication sheet Lists patient’s medical allergies on red allergy sticker on front of chart and on medical record Ensures patient confidentiality by closing door in each patient exam room Chart Prep - obtains diagnostic studies (labs, x-rays, path report, ……) Provides instruction and information to patients as per provider’s orders recorded on medical Record to include, but not limited to: Provides educational instructional materials to patient Provides and reviews special diets Completing lab requests completely to include any specific instructions for the test Instructing patient on collection of stool studies and providing appropriate containers. Dispenses sample medications as ordered by provider Has working knowledge of insurance criteria as it pertains to where patient is required to have labs, x-rays and other procedures performed Knows provider preferences and implements same Restocks nurses station with drugs, diets, instructions, educational materials as needed Restocks patient exam rooms daily Processes hemoccult cards and FIT tests mailed back by patients, documents results, codes results and bills as per guidelines. Properly disposes of contaminated waste following Universal Precautions and OSHA regulations Documents all aspects of patient care according to the policies Completes chart prep for incoming appointments Obtains timely clearances from other physician offices prior to tests or procedures as per RGI guidelines Performs follow-up calls to patients as assigned JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Demonstrates good judgement and reasoning when investigating and solving problems Seeks guidance and direction in the performance of responsibilities and duties RELATIONSHIP AND OTHERS: Maintains cooperative working relationships with all staff and providers and medical offices outside of USDH. Treats all patients and their families with respect, courtesy and professionalism. Promotes a high degree of morals and positivity within the office, including cooperation, communication, and coordination between this job and other USDH jobs Demonstrates ability to tactfully handle difficult situations PLANNING AND TIME UTILIZATION: Consistently shows ability to recognize and deal with priorities INITIATIVE: Performs all duties in an independent manner with minimal direction and supervision Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed, although not directly assigned ATTENDANCE AND RELIABILITY: Does not abuse or take advantage of sick time. Regular attendance is a necessity. Reports to work as scheduled and can complete all functions of the job. Always provides proper notification and notice of absences as outlined in RGI Personnel Policy Manual Reports to work, is at the assigned station and ready to work at proper start time Returns from 30-minute lunch on time.
