The position Physician (Allergy & Immunization) is located at Tripler Medical Center, Honolulu, HI.

n

The Island of Oahu in Hawaii is often nicknamed (or translated as) "The Gathering Place" . It is currently the most populated Hawaiian Island. The city of Honolulu is the largest city, state capital, and main deep water marine port for the State of Hawaii. As a jurisdictional unit, the entire island of Oahu is in Honolulu County, although as a place name, Honolulu occupies only a portion of the southeast end of the island. Well-known features found on Oahu include Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma, Kane’ohe Bay, Kailua Bay, North Shore, and the resort destination, Ko’Olina.

Oahu is also known for having the longest rain shower in history, which lasted for 200 consecutive days. Kane?ohe Ranch reported 247 straight days with rain from August 27, 1993 to April 30, 1994. The average temperature in Oahu is around 70–85 °F (21–29 °C) and the island is the warmest in June through October. The weather during the winter is cooler, but still warm with an average temperature of 68–78 °F (20–26 °C).

Responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES

n

Works under direction of Chief, Allergy Clinical-Immunology Service, who provides broad policy guidance. The individual exercises independent judgment in selection and performance of the full range of diagnostic evaluations for patients. Incumbent works independently in accordance with methods and practices of the medical profession and established administrative policies as an expert in the field of Allergy-Immunology. Medical evaluations and management decisions are reviewed per local hospital outpatient periodic peer-review process, but the individual has considerable latitude for professional technical decisions, overall effectiveness, and accomplishment of objectives. Work is evaluated based on overall effectiveness and development of therapeutic programs. The presence of multiple chronic conditions and a wide range of allergy-immunology disorders and diseases complicate diagnoses and treatments, require the training and experience of a board-certified physician in the Allergy-Immunology Clinic. Responsible for the examination, diagnosis and treatment of the full range of outpatients seen in the clinic.

    Serves as an Allergy-Immunology Specialist responsible for diagnosis and treatment of a full range of patients referred to Allergy-Immunology Clinic. Cases include acute and chronic asthma, anaphylaxis, acute/chronic urticaria, hymenopteran, food allergy, GERD, COPD, vocal cord dysfunction, seasonal/perennial allergic rhinitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, immune deficiency (congenital & acquired), acute/chronic sinusitis, vasomotor rhinitis, interstitial lung disease, rhinitis medicamentosa, idiopathic anaphylaxis and adverse drug reactions, management of adverse reactions to immunizations and immunotherapy, interpretation of PPDs. Provides consultative support to inpatient and outpatient physicians on treatment of patients who have allergic/immunological diseases. Responsible for ordering and supervision of allergy immunotherapy, treatment of adverse reactions to immunotherapy/immunizations, drug challenge, drug desensitization, food challenge, and rush venom immunotherapy. Oversees pulmonary function testing, percutaneous and intradermal skin testing. Reviews cases for service-connected separation.

    Provides lectures to GME program, residents and interns in fundamental and advanced principles of allergy-immunology. Discusses diagnosis of cases and gives specialty advice for Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Practice and ENT. Primary attending/mentor for residents performing elective rotations in Allergy-Immunology. Primary attending/mentor for Allergy/Immunology Fellows from who are performing clinical rotations. Acts as a member of the teaching staff for Internal Medicine and Allergy; participates in the Graduate Medical Education of Allergy fellows, Internal Medicine residents, off-service residents, allied health residents, medical students and other medical trainees. Meets the scholarly requirements of the Allergy fellowship program to include bedside teaching, formal lectures, mentoring resident research and contributing to regional/national presentations and medical publications in allergy or Internal Medicine. Participates in service and hospital performance improvement activities. Makes recommendations on improvement of work methods, organizational features and the restructuring of positions to support the Allergy services and quality patient care.
