Van Driver
JOB DESCRIPTION
Gilbert Unified School District
Purpose Statement:
The job of Van Driver is done for the purpose/s of transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; ensuring vehicle operation is in a safe operating condition; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from vans. Essential Functions
  • Advises students, student supervisors and other passengers of behavior requirements for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations and maintaining safety.
  • Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.
  • Assists students and student supervisors for the purpose of providing safe ingress and egress from vehicles including both emergency situations, evacuations and normal transport.
  • Attends safety meetings and trainings relating to State and district requirements for the purpose of ensuring ability to comply with current standards and guidelines for school vehicle drivers.
  • Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior (e .g. windows, mirrors, sets, floors, ceilings, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation and safety of vehicle.
  • Communicates with a variety of people (e .g. students, student supervisors, parents, site staff, police, etc.) for the purpose of providing and /or acquiring information relating to job functions.
  • Conducts se mi-annual emergency drills for the purpose of ensuring the ability to respond to emergency situations.
  • Drives school vehicles (e.g. van s, etc.) for the purpose of transporting students and student supervisors over scheduled routes and to/from school and/or field trips.
  • Inspects assigned vehicles (e.g. pre and post-trip, check list, brake system, oil levels, coolant levels, tire pressure , etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition and meeting state requirements.
  • Instructs special education students and/or attendants/substitutes for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations and /or orienting them to the safety and behavior issues typical of their route.
  • Monitors vehicle operations, route conditions and rider activities for the purpose of ensuring the safety of passengers.
  • Orients substitute drivers assigned special needs routes for the purpose of providing information about procedures followed to assist special needs student passengers.
  • Prepares reports and documents (e.g. vehicle and/or passenger incident reports, student counts, daily mileage, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support relating to safety, legal requirements, and/or equipment maintenance.
Other Functions
  • Assists other personnel as may be re qui red for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; and operating district vehicles, fire extinguisher, and two-way radio; skills required to perform single technical tasks with a need to occasionally up grade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safety practices and procedures; Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code sections applicable to student transportation; city streets and locations; basic vehicle maintenance; emergency evacuation techniques; CPR and basic first aid; perform basic math; interpret written procedures, write routine documents; speak clearly; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and /or events; gather and /or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issue s and create action plan s. Problem solving with da ta require s following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilities re qui red to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include : communicating with school age riders; setting priorities; and serving as a role mode to students; ability to schedule activities; gather, collate, classify data; use basic job related equipment, work with a diversity of individuals; In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action, reach solutions. Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and /or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
