Under direction and supervision of the surgeon, responsible for providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions during surgical procedures. A Brief Overview
Under direction and supervision of the surgeon, responsible for providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions during surgical procedures. Maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What you will do
  • Performs first assistant duties during surgical procedures under direct supervision of the surgeon.
  • Assists with patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Effectively manages resources such as supplies and equipment. Plans work and completes job responsibilities in an efficient and productive manner.
  • Follows established procedures for quality control, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, compliance activities, and policies and procedures.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned.
Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Technical Degree or Diploma Surgical Assisting
Work Experience Requirements
  • 1-3 years Required documented cases as a surgical assistant/surgical first assistant
  • 3-5 years Surgical technologist
Licenses and Certifications Requirements
  • BASIC LIFE SUPPORT - American Heart Association
  • Certified Surgical Assistant - National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants
  • Certified Surgical First Assistant - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
  • Certified Surgical Assistant (SA-C) American Board of Surgical Assistants
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique in relation to the procedure and the operating field.
  • Demonstrates independent functioning and proficiency in the assistant role in assigned area as well as maintaining competency in other specialties.
  • Demonstrates superior knowledge of the various surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation.
  • Demonstrates superior knowledge and expert practice in the surgery tech role in advanced surgical procedures.
  • Knowledge of use and troubleshooting of complex technical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with co-workers, physicians and other outside professional staff.
  • Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of work flow.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment.
  • Exhibits a higher level of collaboration with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care.
Supervision Provided by this Position
  • There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.
Physical Demands
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
