Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities
- Administers anesthesiology to surgical patients.
- Performs anesthesiology services and administrative functions. Coordinates patient care and the administrative activities of the anesthesiology services during and after surgical procedures.
- Monitors and evaluates anesthesiology activities to determine compliance with established standards of patient care, policies, and regulations. Analyzes the requirements for supplies, equipment, and other resources, and makes recommendations.
- Pediatric anesthesiologists shall be primarily required to perform anesthesiology services during surgical procedures. When the services are not required, or the anesthesiologist's services are more urgently required elsewhere, the pediatric anesthesiologist may be assigned by the Chief, Anesthesiology/Operative Services or his/her designated representative to provide support in other sections/departments of the MTF commensurate with their experience. Pediatric anesthesiologists will participate in the educational requirements of the Anesthesia and Operative Service to include attendance in morning report.
- Operating Room Support: The pediatric anesthesiologist shall provide anesthesiology services for surgical patients to include non-surgical patients requiring anesthesia support in remote areas of the hospital.
- The pediatric anesthesiologist possesses knowledge, judgment, adaptability, clinical skills, technical facility and personal characteristics sufficient to carry out the entire scope of anesthesiology practice.
- The Government will not schedule the pediatric anesthesiologists to provide anesthesiology services at the same time the Government schedules the pediatric anesthesiologists to attend training, meetings, conferences, etc. The time the pediatric anesthesiologists are attending Government scheduled training, meetings, conferences etc. will not be included in the calculations for outpatient care time.
- Documentation: Ensure documentation and reports are legible. Verify the content and correctness of all prepared reports by affixing his/her own signature or stamp to all copies of the document and validating its contents.
- As, required, use electronic medical record to manage patients and medical information and communicate with other health care providers and ancillary staff.
- The contract pediatric anesthesiologists are required to annotate and sign medical records in accordance with Army Regulation (AR) 40-66 (Medical Record Administration and Health Care Documentation), as well as local requirements.
Minimum Requirements
- Degree/Education: Must be a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Osteopathy (D.O.) who is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. If a foreign medical graduate physician, shall possess a valid certification from the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates or 5th Path.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support for Providers. Must be currently trained, certified, and maintain qualification in CPR and emergency cardiac care as evidenced by successful training and certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). No on-line certifications will be accepted. Subspecialty certification (i.e., six month concentrated rotation in pediatrics with letter) or pediatric fellowship training is required.
- Experience:
- Knowledge of the provision of medical management and consultation during the perioperative period, in Pain Medicine and in critical care medicine.
- Knowledge of a wide variety of anesthesiology procedures and techniques including the functional characteristics of complex respiratory equipment.
- This includes, administering assisted and controlled ventilation to patients with tracheotomies and other complex medical problems, performing artificial airway care and maintenance.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology including an in-depth understanding of the structure and function of the lungs and bronchi as related to gas exchange and ventilation, in order to administer special ventilation techniques such as: positive and expiratory pressure and intermittent mandatory ventilation; interpreting results of blood gas studies and makes adjustments in ventilator settings; removing endotracheal tubes; and assessing patient's respiratory status and evaluating effectiveness of therapy.
- Knowledge of pharmacology including an understanding of various classes of drugs and their uses, ability to prepare dosages and concentrations and select proper methods of administration, and skill in identifying complications and interactions of various drugs; in order to determine effectiveness of the therapy being delivered to patients and to make recommendations to physicians regarding changes or alternatives to treatment.
- Broad knowledge of computers and related software to include word processing, spreadsheet, data base management, statistical applications, and intranet and Internet connections and applications.
- Board Certification: Must be an M.D. or D.O. who is Board Certified in Anesthesiology. If a foreign medical graduate physician, shall possess a valid certification from the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates or 5th Path.
- Licensure/Registration: Must have and maintain a valid, unrestricted license from any U.S. state, District of Columbia; or U.S. territory or jurisdiction to provide health care within the scope of practice for a specific health care discipline. In addition, the Anesthesiologist who writes prescriptions for controlled substances must have a current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) certificate or Controlled Drug Substance number as appropriate. The contractor must ensure that renewal actions are accomplished well before expiration of the provider's license and/or DEA certification to ensure compliance with the contract. DEA certificates are not necessary at overseas locations.
