JOB SUMMARY:
• The School Nurse is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of healthcare for the Mary A. Dobbins School.
Responsibilities:
• Comply with standards set forth by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing and agency policies and New Jersey Administration Code Title 6A Education.
• Participate in the admission process for clients that are admitted to the Mary A. Dobbins School
• Assure that all assigned activities adhere to the standards and requirements for health and medical care as dictated by the applicable regulatory and accrediting bodies.
• Manage, direct and coordinate healthcare activities for students during the school day to include medication distribution, triage of medical and health related issues and ensure appropriate follow-up, and if needed, ensure clients are transported for medical related issue.
• Assure that all healthcare records are maintained in compliance with state and federal laws.
• Serve as a liaison between Mary A. Dobbins and the student's community in meeting the physical healthcare needs of the student body.
• Nursing evaluation and, if necessary, triage of students post restraint.
• Be an active participant in coordination and treatment team meetings as is relevant, appropriate and necessary.
• Oversee health education curriculum and disease prevention strategies to residents.
• Review and monitor the medication documentation in the Electronic Medication Administration Record (EMAR) for medications administered during the school day.
• Maintain compliance with Department of Education requirements
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing.
• Possess and maintain licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) with a minimum of five (5) years' experience with emotionally and behaviorally disturbed, abused/neglected, and/or psychiatrically impaired child/adolescent population with strong working knowledge of psychotropic medications.
• Possess and maintain a certification as NJ School Nurse.
• Possess and maintain current professional CPR/AED certification.
• Participate in a minimum of twelve (12) hours of training per year that is inclusive of each of the following curricula areas: Principles of behavior management; Alcohol, tobacco and substance abuse; Human sexuality and AIDS/HIV; and Suicide awareness and prevention.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing (legibly) to multi-disciplinary staff.
• Manual dexterity and normal mental and visual attention.
• Computer competence in general office applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, calendar, computer based EMAR applications).
• Mental requirements include, but are not limited to: the ability to concentrate, take initiative, multi-task, cope with stress, stay alert, collaborate with others, work independently and use independent judgment to accomplish desired results.
• Successful and on-going completion of the organization approved Safe Crisis Management (SCM) program.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing (writing sample required).
• Employee must possess a valid driver's license and if duties require driving, be able to drive an agency owned vehicle
