BUS DRIVER General Statement of Job Operates a school bus on assigned routes and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the programs and offerings of the school system.
Required qualifications - High school diploma or GED
- Applicant must hold a valid NC state driver's license.
- Applicant must hold or be eligible to obtain a CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
Essential duties and responsibilities - Provides safe, efficient and on-time transportation of children to and from assigned schools on a daily basis.
- Obey all traffic laws and school bus regulations.
- Operates the assigned school bus on the route(s) and schedule provided by the school.
- Maintains discipline of students assigned to the school bus.
- Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.
- Transports only authorized students and loads/unloads students only at authorized school or bus stop locations.
- Keeps the school bus clean and free of trash.
- Reports all accidents as required by the school system and remains at the scene of the accident until released by the on-scene transportation director.
- Performs pre-and post-trip inspections of the bus.
- Completes all required reports and secures the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a route.
Additional duties - Performs other related work as required.
Essential knowledge and abilities - Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations.
- Must be physically able to operate a school bus.
- Must exercise tact and courtesy in maintaining acceptable relations with parent/guardians of students transported and with school personnel.
- Ability to maintain discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to complete required reports.
- Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
