Overview
Complete Utility Contractors (CUC) is searching for a permanent, full-time, career-minded General Superintendent to join our team and bring with them a wealth of field experience to support and drive our projects from a field level. The Superintendent will work closely with Project Managers, Engineers and the Forepersons to ensure projects are moving in a timely and cost-effective manner. What you will be doing
- Overseeing the daily activities at work site, including scheduling of workers, delivery of equipment and materials, and progress reporting.
- Leading from the front in establishing good working relationships and examples amongst project teams; and promoting safety and the implementation of all applicable HSE programs, policies, and procedures.
- Driving production and daily deliverables.
- Supporting the project through extensive field knowledge and maintaining an on-site presence.
- Implementing and enforcing safety and quality guidelines.
- Resolving on-site issues, disputes, and emergencies.
- Monitoring and tracking project progress, while identifying and mitigating risks.
- Understanding the project budget, identifying and actioning opportunities to keep costs low and production high without compromising safety or quality.
- Managing site crews and handling and/or communicating on-site issues and disturbances.
- Supervising site crews and providing positive and constructive feedback.
- Planning construction processes and working with contractors to plan required work activities; assisting with coordinating subcontractors, arranging, and attending subcontractor coordination.
- Delegating and managing daily tasks given to field team members.
- Regularly communicating work progress, schedule variance, crew, and safety performance to Project Managers.
- Working with the operations management team to identify subcontractors & site staffing requirements and assisting with monitoring construction work schedules including look ahead schedules.
- Keeping track of material stock, rentals and orders; and monitoring equipment, tool, and material usage on site.
- Coaching and mentoring Forepersons on safety, quality, productivity, and scheduling; ensuring Forepersons know and understand the plan of the day.
- Participating in annual performance reviews of Forepersons.
- Working with Human Resources and Operations management teams to fill hiring, performance management, and employee relations needs.
- Participating in incident investigations and site inspections.
- Monitoring Forepersons’ responsibility to follow-up on Project Manager materials requisitions for site receiving.
- Ensuring Foreperson submittals of: daily reports with claimed progress using job cost codes, worker daily timesheets, and equipment log/operator time slips.
- Monitoring Forepersons conducting Daily Toolbox Talks.
What we are looking for
- 5+ years experience is required in civil utility construction; experience working with deep sewers is a must.
- 2+ years experience working in a Civil Construction Superintendent role or similar.
- Valid BC driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or similar is preferred; equivalent training and/or experience will also be considered.
- Strong safety record with thorough understanding of occupational hazards and safe working procedures with live utilities and sloped terrain.
- Live utility locating experience.
- Expertise with trenching, shoring, trench box assembly and safe excavation procedures.
- Excellent communications skills, both written and oral and strong experience completing field/site paperwork and timesheets.
- Understanding of pipe gradients, pipe materials and specifications, fitting and assembly, proper bedding, protection of other services and methods of backfill and compaction.
- Ability to work collaboratively with everyone including customers, operation and project managers, internal crews, and subcontractors.
- Have proficient knowledge of MMCD and OH&S regulations and knowledge of construction disciplines (knowledge of materials and methods required)
- Attention to safety, quality, and production.
- Strong job planning/organizational (site and documentation), time management skills and stewardship of all equipment and tools.
