Environ/Health & Safety Technician II

This role will support the Materials Laboratory in the Decker Engineering building in Corning, NY, with an emphasis on a balance of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) responsibilities and hands-on lab technician duties. The position will involve 50% EHS-related tasks, including compliance with regulatory requirements, and 50% lab support, assisting with experimental testing and lab maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular safety inspections and assessments within the lab.
- Use Gen suite EHS software to input inspection results and track follow-up actions.
- Provide management with insight on safety improvements and hazardous waste operations.
- Ensure hazardous waste labeling and removal protocols are followed, collaborating with building managers.
- Assist with new chemical inventory management and removal of discarded chemicals.
- Provide support for high-temperature materials experiments and assist with routine testing procedures.
- Support lab personnel with equipment maintenance and operations in adherence to safety standards.
- Ensure compliance with safety training and certification requirements.
Required Experience & Skills (2-3 years minimum):
- Experience in a lab environment.
- Knowledge of hazardous waste segregation and RCRA regulations.
- Experience in hazardous waste disposal.
- Experience with high-temperature processes (hot work).
- Proficient with Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, etc.).
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to perform inspections and audits.
- Knowledge of OSHA 1910 standards.
- Hands-on experience with equipment and machinery.
Required Education:
- Associate's degree (AS/AAS) in a relevant field.
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous experience in EHS or related fields.
- Experience in materials, mechanical, or chemical laboratory tech roles.
- Understanding of hazard identification and EHS safety protocols.
- Knowledge and experience in lab safety practices.
