Contaminated Site Remediation and Redevelopment

The majority of positions are located in Trenton, while others may be located throughout the state.

Description

Under the close supervision of a supervisory official, in an Environmental Services Program, learns to conduct routine surveys, studies, inspections, and/or investigations relating to the improvement and/or monitoring of environmental conditions, and/or the enforcement of environmental laws/regulations; does other related duties.


Specific to the Position

Division of Enforcement & Financial Operations

The Division of Enforcement and Financial Operations ensures that Contaminated Site Remediation & Redevelopment (CSRR) is provided with fiscal, contracting, IT, and enforcement support. This support is vital in assisting CSRR with accomplishing the Department’s priorities and remediation goals.


Division of Remediation Management

The Division of Remediation Management ensures all remediation activities conducted at contaminated properties are protective of public health, safety and the environment. The Division oversees remediation activities performed by responsible entities and conducts publicly funded investigations and remedial actions at contaminated sites where a responsible entity is unwilling or unable to perform the necessary actions.


Division of Environmental Evaluation and Remediation Review

The Division of Environmental Evaluation and Remediation Review provides technical and regulatory assistance on contaminated site remedial issues to lead units within DEP, the regulated community, and Licensed Site Remediation Professionals. Oversees the redevelopment, permitting and case manager oversight of sites undergoing remediation by inspecting and reviewing key documents submitted by LSRPs. Also, issues permits for remedial actions involving engineering and/or institutional controls to ensure the protectiveness of human health and the environment of remedial actions where contamination remains above applicable soil and ground water standards.


Requirements

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in one of the Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Environmental Planning, Physical Geography or in Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Bio-resource Engineering.


NOTE: All U.S. degrees and transcripts must be from an accredited college or university. All foreign degrees and transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized evaluation service by the closing date of this posting. Failure to provide documentation may result in ineligibility.


License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.


Advancement

Appointees in State Government who successfully complete the twelve (12) month training period will be eligible for advancement to the Environmental Specialist 1 title in accordance with New Jersey Civil Service Commission procedures. The inability of an employee in this trainee title to attain a level of performance warranting advancement to the above-listed titles shall be considered as cause for separation.

Residency
