Job Description

Summary The primary purpose of this position is to remove, assemble, design, form, install, and maintain all types of insulating materials. Responsibilities Lays out, cuts, forms, assembles, and installs all types of insulating materials on items such as turbines, air ducts, heaters, chillers, air duct, water lines, generators, pumps, evaporators, refrigeration units, boilers, and other conventional or one-of-a-kind enclosures with irregular curves and planes. Plans, oversees, and/or performs the removal of asbestos and asbestos containing materials (ACM) from a variety of areas and items such as boiler rooms, basements, crawl spaces, attics, office spaces, industrial areas, and equipment away from structures. Plans, lays out, and develops patterns, templates, and sketches of items to be covered using blueprints and drawings, precise dimensions, parallel and radial line development and the principles of triangulation. Also plans and lays out the needed routing, placement, pitch, incline and elevation of high pressure piping systems and equipment. Uses all of the tools, materials and equipment common to the trade such as knives, trowels, electric hand saws, gasket punches, blower machines, sewing, stapling machines, rules and etc. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established asbestos regulations and safety rules. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3600 Structural And Finishing Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a WG-3610 INSULATOR more than normal without supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of mathematical calculations such as linear, angular, cubic, and circular measurements to calculate and identify precise dimensions of insulation requirements; of technical practices such as computing thermal conductivity and sound absorbency by using blower machines to apply sound or heat insulating materials into closed spaces and fabricating molded sections of insulation to enclose unique or unusual structures and of asbestos removal. 2. Knowledge of appearance, purpose, and/or use of a variety of insulating materials to include asbestos, vapor sealing compounds, waterproof covers and fireproof papers. 3. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices and procedures. 4. Skilled in asbestos removal and in using and maintaining tools and equipment such as electric hand saws, gasket punches, lacing rings, washers, hooks, grommets, respirators, pipe threading tools etc. 5. Ability to work with dexterity and to remove, assemble, design, develop, form and install various types of insulating materials without more than normal supervision. Ability to install and maintain high pressure piping systems and associated equipment. 6. Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, project plans, blueprints and instructions in order to plan, design, lay out and install insulation. Physical Effort The work requires moderate physical exertion such as prolonged standing, occasional crawling, bending, stooping, reaching, continuous movement of hands and arms when fitting and installing materials, climbing up and down ladders/scaffolding,/platforms while carrying heavy items; frequent lifting, carrying, positioning, loading, or handling tools and materials weighing up to 50 pounds and sometimes working in cramped and awkward positions. Working Conditions Work is usually performed inside well lighted and ventilated locations or outside under good weather conditions. May occasionally be exposed to extreme heat or cold. Sometimes works in noisy, damp, or dirty areas. Frequently works from ladders, stagings, or elevated platforms and/or in buildings and structures undergoing alteration or repair. Subject to possible cuts, abrasions, and burns and may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of bruises or broken bones. Employee is required to follow occupational and safety procedures to eliminate or minimize these conditions and may be required to wear respiratory devices or protective clothing and equipment which may be restrictive and uncomfortable. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
