Surgical Technicians perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, prepare sterile dressing and clean instruments for terminal sterilization. Surgery would not be possible if it were not for Surgical Technicians.nnA caregiver in this position works 6:30am - 5:00pm with on-call requirements.nnA caregiver who excels in this role will:nnAssist in the provision of quality, individualized patient care.nnFollow guidelines for perioperative practices as established by AORN.nnReview daily assignments and ascertain surgeon-specific preferences and type of anesthesia.nnIdentify and prioritize individual patient care needs.nnPlan care based on contemplated procedure, standards of practice, admission assessment and physician preferences.nnAssemble, check and open sterile packs, sutures and more.nnPractice and assist others in maintaining aseptic technique and report and/or correct any breaks.nnComply with required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting and side-site verification.nnRemain with the sterile setup to assure maintenance of the sterile field.nnAssist with draping.nnPrepare and/or edit the surgeon's preference list to ensure quality care of patients.nnCommunicate pertinent information during the procedure and during personnel changes.nnCollect specimens as directed by the surgeon and identify the origin of each specimen to the RN Circulator.nnAssist surgeons and assistants with retraction and suction as directed.nnAssure that all biohazard material is handled and disposed of properly using universal precautions.nnKeep accurate counts of all sutures, sharps, soft goods and instruments.nnAssure that all instrumentation is returned to decontamination with proper documentation count sheets.nnMinimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:nnCertified Surgical Technologist.nnBasic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).nnPreferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:nnTwo years of experience in a multi-disciplined OR in an acute care hospital setting.nnOur caregivers continue to create the best outcomes for our patients across each of our facilities.
