The Director, Intellectual Property Licensing, is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of a team of IPL Analysts and Coordinators, helping to ensure that all relevant mechanical licensing and publishing royalties' functions are handled in a timely manner to support designated Sony labels. These activities include publishing rights assessment & clearance, license negotiation, contract review, royalty rate calculation, along with sound recording copyright registrations.
What you'll do:
  • Manage and train a team of Analysts and Coordinators as necessary to ensure proper clearance, licensing and payment for all assigned label releases. This includes the oversight of day-to-day activities along with implementation of strategic plans necessary to meet all label requirements on a monthly and quarterly basis as necessary.
  • Serve as a primary liaison to various internal departments (BA, Finance, A&R Admin, Release Planning) at assigned label(s) along with their relevant external customers (e.g. publishers, managers and artist reps) regarding publishing & copyright matters
  • Support management of and adherence to the IPL Dept's best practices, policies and procedures regarding licensing, royalties, registrations
  • Contribute extensively to the Department's ongoing systems and strategic initiatives to help adapt to the evolving requirements of Sony Music's labels.
  • Point person for the assigned Label Team's publishing license negotiations re: new license language and blanket deals with publishers
  • Coordinate and complete special projects to further departmental goals as assigned by SVP IPL Licensing.
  • Oversee IP Licensing Coordinators for assigned projects to ensure that writer and publisher information is confirmed, licenses are obtained and registrations processed in a timely & accurate manner.
  • Obtain, confirm songwriter and publisher ownership splits/shares for songs were assigned.
  • Supervise IP Licensing Analysts in a wide range of rights clearances; review and approve the application of relevant artist and producer contracts to ensure the accurate calculation and timely processing of publisher royalties.
Who you are:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience with standard music publishing clearances, licensing and royalties' administration; multiple years of supervisory/managerial experience preferred.
  • Ability to handle many complex and time-sensitive projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately complete a very high volume of work under intense deadline pressure.
  • Flexibility and the ability to deal with project uncertainty and change.
  • Independent follow-through on projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent quantitative and analytical skills; strong mathematical skills and basic understanding of royalty accounting concepts.
  • Highly proficient skills with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Demonstrated experience with royalty accounting, rights management, financial processes & systems.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of persons both inside and outside of the company.
