Description
Position Summary: The Broadcast Engineer supports the mission of KEXP by facilitating the operation and maintenance of a wide range of FM broadcast and program distribution services, audio and video production facilities, systems integration projects, and new technology initiatives.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:- Maintain, repair, and track status of technical infrastructure supporting broadcast, production, and post-production facilities.
- Provide engineering support for FM broadcast and related systems.
- Maintain remote monitoring systems.
- Assist in the operation of broadcast systems; participate in the after-hours on-call rotation supporting 24/7/365 operation of radio transmission facilities.
- Provide technical assistance to production staff relating to equipment usage and training.
- Assist with design, installation and maintenance of services pertaining to new audio/video systems, including remote broadcast, two-way video conference systems, intercom, digital signage, audio PA systems, and broadcast studio facilities.
- Assist with oversight of third party vendors.
- In coordination with the Technical Operations team, provide system support for KEXP storage solutions, routing and distribution infrastructure, Mac and PC production workstations, and audio and video craft edit systems.
- In coordination with the Media Asset Manager, support asset management system workflows and infrastructure, workstations, servers, and software systems.
- Participate in after-hours on-call support rotation for asset management system and digital play-out systems and workflows.
- Configure and maintain Wheatnet IP network and related systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on studio hardware systems.
- Create and maintain documentation for on-air systems, production and post-production and related systems, including technical drawings and wire lists.
Organizational & Supervisory Responsibilities:- Maintains thorough understanding of KEXP organizational policies, including employee handbook, procedures, expense reporting, and payroll submission; follows policies and leads by example.
- Actively participates in our culture of philanthropy, which honors the important role our donors, volunteers, business and community partners play in the life of KEXP. Collaborates across teams and departments to steward donors on behalf of KEXP and actively seeks opportunities to integrate philanthropy into their role within KEXP operations, programs, and projects.
Supervision Received: Position reports to Director of Engineering.
Supervision Exercised: Directs work of part-time hourly Broadcast Engineers and Engineering volunteers and interns.
Requirements
Experience: Four years of full-time experience in radio or television broadcast technician work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above.
Position Qualifications:- Demonstrated ability to maintain audio over IP networks and implement best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain FM broadcast facilities and implement best practices.
- Ability to support video and audio production remote broadcasts and related systems.
- Demonstrated ability to work with production staff to determine needs and design and implement solutions that meet those needs.
- Demonstrated ability to train production staff on proper operation of new solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to create, modify and update technical drawings and wire lists.
- Ability to work on a periodic on-call basis.
- Must be able to work an irregular schedule, including evenings or weekends as needed and additional hours during peak times, or as required.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies.
- Valid Washington State Driver's License, as minimal local travel is required for night and weekend coverage at events; some in- and/or out-of-state travel may also be required.

Physical Requirements: Work may require access to confined spaces and heights, for example in utility tunnels, on building roofs, under equipment, and inside equipment racks. Employees must use approved safety procedures. Must be able to, in a timely fashion, transport equipment to remote locations. Long periods of being in a stationary position; operating a computer and other office equipment; frequently moving to/from various work areas; frequently communicating by phone and email; frequently moving around a 28,000 square foot facility to support different systems. Must be able to move at least 40 pounds.
Working Conditions: Primary location in typical business office environment, with frequent meetings and event attendance at a variety of off-site locations. Secondary location at transmitter facility and occasionally at off-site remote broadcast locations.
Compensation & Benefits: This full-time, non-exempt position includes an annual salary of $95,000.00. KEXP offers a generous benefits package which includes medical/dental/vision coverage (premiums 90-100% employer paid), retirement plan with matching, vacation starting at three weeks per year plus holidays and sick leave, parental leave, and much more.
