Henderson Engineers is seeking a Lead Operational Technology (OT) Consultant to join our team. The Lead (OT) Consultant is responsible for identifying and quantifying problems experienced by building operators and owners. They work with other disciplines to coordinate facility related control system strategies and develop effective solutions. They gather various stakeholder needs into a clear vision and research current codes, standards, technology systems, and applications. They have general knowledge of network architecture and data architecture, and an in-depth understanding of supervisory monitoring and control system design methodologies. They collaborate closely with clients and cross-functional teams to ensure that operational technology solutions meet stakeholder needs and support organizational goals.

Minimum Qualifications for the Role are:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, architecture, planning, design, social science required. An equivalent combination of technical degree and related work experience in the architecture, engineering, or construction industry may be considered.
  • 7+ years of work experience actively consulting and/or designing technology-related solutions required. Systems integrator or specialty consultant (technology, security, AV, life safety, etc.) experience may be considered.
  • Strong working knowledge of the AEC industry specific to the interactions between building owners, architectural and engineering design teams, general contractors and building operators.
  • Strong experience in how operational technology enables sustainability, operational efficiency and safety business objectives and compliance.
  • General knowledge of network architecture and data architecture.
  • Proficiency in supervisory monitoring and control system design methodologies.
  • Experience with integrated building management systems (IBMS), building automation systems (BMS), SCADA systems, or similar technologies.
  • Familiarity with integration of various building systems such as HVAC, lighting, security, and energy management.
  • Proficiency in Revit and Bluebeam required.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Relevant industry certifications in network design (CompTIA Network+, CCNA, CCDP, CCIE, etc.), cybersecurity (CompTIA Security+, CISSP), cloud (CompTIA Cloud+, Azure, AWS) or smart buildings (SmartScore) preferred.
  • Excellent storytelling and presentation skills.
  • Ability to lead workshops and design charrettes.
  • Resourceful self-starter with the ability to work productively on multiple projects simultaneously under strict deadlines.
  • Ability to research, collect and analyze data, draw conclusions, and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Adaptability to changing work environments, priorities, and organizational needs.

Skills and Duties you will be Responsible for while in this role:

Consulting & Analysis
  • Identify, document, and analyze client business objectives and the role operational technology plays in enabling those.
  • Engage with building operators and owners to understand and quantify operational challenges and needs.
  • Synthesize various stakeholder needs into a clear vision.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of building systems to identify deficiencies, inefficiencies and areas for improvement using operational technology.
  • Research current codes, standards, technology systems, and applications relevant to client needs.

Control Strategy Facilitation
  • Closely collaborate and coordinate facility related control system strategies with other internal and/or external design disciplines such as sustainability, MEP, fire and life safety, lighting, telecom, security, AV, etc.
  • Support building technology system engineers (structured cabling systems, electronic security, AV, network) to identify operational outcomes and functional benefits for the end-client.
  • Develop facility user journeys, including client presentations, reports, and other innovative visual graphical deliverables to communicate these journeys to client stakeholder groups.
  • Participate in client stakeholder engagement activities, including ideation workshops and design requirement identification.

Technical Expertise
  • Apply general knowledge of network architecture to design and evaluate building system networks.
  • Utilize understanding of data architecture to support data collection, storage, and analysis.
  • Research and validate technical capabilities of potential smart building technologies, including analytic platforms and energy and sustainability reporting tools.
  • Design and oversee implementation of supervisory monitoring and control systems for building operations.
  • Develop system specifications, diagrams, and documentation to guide implementation, operations, and training.
  • Participate in the development of deliverables for AI-ready building projects, including evaluation of client key performance indicators and controls system integration.
  • Research, develop and incorporate knowledge of building fault detection and diagnostics methods and datasets into consulting engagements.
  • Research, develop and incorporate knowledge of connections, analytic methodologies and data visualization platforms between energy efficiency, real estate utilization, and occupant experience to drive business efficiency and revenue opportunities.
  • Research and apply knowledge of in integrating intelligent building systems to enhance overall building performance through the full technology stack.
  • Research, develop and incorporate knowledge of building digital twins and relevant data source integrations including BIM and GIS into consulting engagements.

Client Experience
  • Coordinate with clients to gather and document system and design requirements.
  • Maintain proactive communication throughout project cycles, anticipating and addressing client questions and concerns.
  • Participate in project meetings with the design team and clients, potentially including travel.
  • Provide training and support to clients on the use and maintenance of operational technologies.
  • Develop and deliver documentation and presentations to communicate design information effectively.

Continuous Learning & Development
  • Stay updated on the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in operational technologies.
  • Pursue opportunities for professional development and learning.
  • Share knowledge and insights with peers and team members to promote continuous improvement.
  • Apply knowledge of local, national, or global best practice codes and industry standards (e.g., NIST, WELL, BREEAM, SPIRE, NEC, IBC, BICSI, EIA/TIA, WiredScore/SmartScore).

Project Management
  • Coordinate project activities, including scheduling, resource allocation, and quality assurance.
  • Collaborate with project managers to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Respond to client inquiries and coordinate project delivery with a focus on operational technology requirements.
  • May participate in construction meetings, review, and respond to technology system submittals and RFIs.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and client requirements.

Business Development
  • Leverage opportunities and relationships internally across Henderson Companies and externally across the industry to develop business growth.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining relationships with clients and strategic partners to support business development activities.
  • Engage with clients to create and deliver value messages for potential and existing smart building/district/city projects.
  • Participate in client meetings, industry events, and conferences to build professional relationships.
  • Identify opportunities for expanding services and propose solutions to meet client needs.
