Job Summary:This position provides technical support for electrical engineering solutions for new development projects at Leeward including wind, solar, and storage with the primary responsibility of providing solutions to improve overall plant cost, operational costs, performance, reliability, and safety. This position reports to the Manager of Electrical Engineering. The goals of this position are to continue development of plant design standards, ensure current projects in construction and the development pipeline meet technical and business requirements while maintaining our long-term ownership focus. The position requires experience with electrical plant design and construction as well as the ability to manage complex and time sensitive projects in a fast-paced environment and communicate effectively.
Essential Functions:Ensure the management and delivery of the preliminary internal engineering needed to support the Development pipeline, including optimized site layouts, preliminary engineering/studies to meet project needs as well as support interconnection applications and agreements as needed.
- Complete preliminary design studies such as loss, reactive power, and short circuit
- Review electrical engineering activities, including DC, Low Voltage AC, MV collection system design, substation design, transmission line design, interconnection switchyard design and ensure compliance with utility interconnection requirements and Leeward design standards.
- Review electrical discipline calculations, equations, and system models including electric circuit calculations, 3-phase power and ampacity, impedance, sizing of conductors, calculation of losses, reactive power, verification of proper phase rotation, relaying calculations, short circuit calculations, Arc Flash studies, and sizing of overhead transmission lines and hardware.
- Consult with Operations Engineering on electrical design updates to existing facilities as needed due to regulatory compliance issues related to FERC or NERC changes.
Qualifications:- 4-Year Bachelors Electrical Engineering Degree.
- Minimum two (2) years of renewable power generation experience
- Excellent communication skills, including ability to clearly communicate ideas to non-engineers.
- Ability to remain focused and reliable in completing tasks and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and manage technical projects, including interaction with outside vendors.
- Basic understanding of solar and wind substation layouts and medium voltage AC collection systems.
- Demonstrated ability to manage priorities in a complex and dynamic environment
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of a valid driver's license
- EIT Registration and the ability to work towards PE registration
- Basic understanding of industry software such as SKM, AutoCAD, CDEGS, CYME, WinIGS
- Knowledge and experience completing project studies such as short circuit, load flow, reactive power, ampacity, and arc flash studies.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, protection system, wiring diagrams and other common specifications.
- Ability to work in Extra High Voltage Substations, with exposure to high electric and magnetic fields.
- Keep current on Wind Turbine, Solar Module, Solar Inverter, and Energy Storage technology offerings and suppliers.
- Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) a plus
Physical Demands:- Position will require sitting for long periods of time as well as occasionally lifting up to twenty-pound boxes.
