Are you passionate about research studies and analyses' Leidos is seeking a Research Scientist - Epidemiologist to aid in research for the Undersea Health Epidemiology Research Program (UHERP) at the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL) in Groton, CT. UHERP focuses on the improvement of military readiness by examining and characterizing the health effects of the submarine and diving environments. NSMRL conducts research and investigates the effects of medical, psychological, and performance issues associated with the health and performance of naval personnel in operational and non-operational settings. The Challenge:
  • Develop, initiate, modify, and maintain medical event monitoring, a database system, and data reporting for the purpose of obtaining epidemiological data and findings for medical surveillance and research, subject to final active duty or GS approval.
  • Assist with planning, designing, implementing, and performing epidemiology research to investigate illnesses and injuries among Navy divers and submariners, evaluating the effects of deployment and exposures on long term health outcomes, with a goal of developing preventive programs and mitigation efforts and informing future Navy health policy.
  • Incorporate linked data from the military health system and other DOD databases and apply rigorous methodology to analyze longitudinal data.
  • Work in close coordination with and provide consultation to the BUMED, Submarine Force commands, the Chief of Naval Operations, Naval Sea Systems Command and other DOD activities, as directed by the COR.
  • Assist in publishing or communicating results of epidemiology data and research to the Navy commands above and other activities as needed. Prepare semi-technical summaries and publications for non-research technical and general audiences.
  • Assist in reporting findings, outcomes and recommendations through presentations, briefings and publications, subject to final Government approval and submission.
  • Monitor advances in medical literature, technologies and relevant discoveries in epidemiology by attending seminars and conferences.
  • Educate and advise health care professionals and scientists collaborating in the epidemiology research projects. Assist in authoring research pre-proposals, research protocols: technical reports, and journal publications addressing the above topics.
  • Assist in creating illustrations, charts, and graphs. Support coordination of projects and other research with Naval and other military activities, including the U.S. Coast Guard, other federal and civilian collaborators and contractors.
  • Perform research investigations, analyses, and/or experiments in accordance with Government approved research protocols.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with NSMRL personnel to optimize scientific methodologies and to utilize established best practices.

What Sets You Apart:
  • Candidates requires Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 4 or more years of relevant experience or Master's degree with 2 or more years relevant experience from an accredited university in the United States or an international University of equivalent standard.
  • Candidates must have willingness to be exposed to a broad research and management experience in the human performance domain, including experimental psychology, Industrial/Organizational, psychophysics, cognitive, social or a related field to conduct the multi-disciplinary research needed.
  • Candidates must have the ability to extend and apply the knowledge of behavioral research to the missions of the command and the Navy, evidence of scientific achievement as shown by the publication of articles and reports, and membership in scientific societies, knowledge of and experience in writing and editing technical and scientific research information.
  • Candidates must have the ability to speak well, concisely and confer with professional colleagues on a peer basis.
  • Demonstrate the ability to extend and apply the knowledge of research to the missions of the NSMRL Command and the Navy.
  • Ability to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level, but current clearance is not required.
  • Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required.

Pay Range: Pay Range $81,250.00 - $146,875.00
