Job Description
R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) has an opening for an Intermediate/Senior Air & Noise Specialist to join our Air & Noise Group. This position will work out of one of our offices in Ontario and will report to the Manager, Air & Noise.

We encourage applications from anyone with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in air quality, acoustics/noise, or vibration.

The Air & Noise Group at Burnside consists of chemical engineers, technicians, and environmental scientists (chemistry and physics) who contribute a broad range of experience in providing solutions to project challenges. The group undertakes work for a variety of clients including municipalities, private sector, and indigenous communities involved in land development, industry, and transportation. Client industries include food manufacturing, agricultural pharmaceuticals, chemical distribution, fertilizer manufacturing, chemical refining, stainless steel products and heavy industrial processes.

The Role

The position involves preparing reports for regulatory agencies that assess the Air Quality, Noise, and/or Vibration impacts for sources on receptors.

More specifically, the position will involve carrying out some or all of the following duties;

  • Preparation of Air Quality Impact Assessments submitted to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) for Environmental Assessments (EAs), Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECAs), Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASRs), and Land Use Compatibility assessments submitted to municipalities;
  • Preparation of Noise Impact Assessments submitted to the MECP for EAs, ECAs, EASRs, and Land Use Compatibility assessments submitted to municipalities;
  • Preparation of Vibration Impact Assessments submitted to the Metrolinx for construction projects, and Zone of Influence (Vibration ZOI) assessments submitted to municipalities;
  • Either collect information required for the above tasks or direct other staff in its collection;
  • Prepare calculations required to support the above tasks and defend the conclusions of those reports;
  • Build and run simulation models using AERMOD, Predictor/iNoise, and spreadsheets;
  • Provide Peer Review services to municipalities for any of the above;
  • Trouble shooting construction monitoring equipment and reviewing associated reports; and,
  • Other duties as assigned.


Professional Knowledge & Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have:

  • Degree in Chemistry (Air Quality), or a degree in Physics (Noise) or a related scientific or engineering discipline;
  • A minimum of 6 years experience in either the Air or Noise & Vibration consulting industry in Ontario;
  • Attention to detail, personal expectation of high quality deliverables, a mathematical aptitude and an in depth understanding of Microsoft Excel;
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) along with excellent interpersonal abilities and willingness to work in a team atmosphere;
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks; and
  • Ability to function in a fast paced, multi-disciplinary consulting environment.


Qualified candidates should have:

  • High degree of problem solving and decision making skills; and
  • Ability to work in a collegial atmosphere with other members of the group and other disciplines.
