The Director of Digital News and Audience at WNYC is charged with directing and overseeing the online journalism of America's largest local public media newsroom. The Director of Digital News and Audience will work with the newsroom and product teams to grow audiences that frequent WNYC's local news website, Gothamist, the WNYC app, newsletters and social media in benefit of residents of New York City.
This modern journalist has a thorough understanding of how to design and execute a multiyear digital strategy that progressively adds complexity to audience development efforts. Most critically, this journalist must also be an empathetic and confident manager of people, devoted to articulating high journalistic expectations, embracing diverse perspectives, and managing through other editors to achieve success.
This position reports to the Editor in Chief at WNYC and New York Public Radio.
Responsibilities:
- Design, implement and oversee a multiyear digital growth strategy for Gothamist, WNYC's news website, newsletters, the WNYC app and other digital newsroom products
- Develop a comprehensive off-platform strategy that engages and retains new audiences within the New York City region
- Set and consistently articulate audience priorities and goals, and how they track to the newsroom's goals of publishing journalism that improves the lives of New Yorkers
- Spearhead creative and innovative programs to engage journalists and showcase the best of local journalism
- Work collaboratively with product and data teams to execute on journalistic and strategic objectives
- Be a proactive problem solver: Work with internal and external partners to identify and solve technical and nontechnical problems limiting digital successes
- Create inclusive and equitable opportunities that support professional growth and leadership development
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing and inspiring other journalists, including other managers, with kindness and fairness
- Thorough understanding of SEO, metrics, engagement strategies, and common tools such as Chartbeat and Google Analytics
- Demonstrated ability conceiving, explaining and implementing change strategies and methodically measuring results
- Impeccable journalistic integrity, editorial judgment and editing skills
- Excellent organizational skills. Ability to manage several projects concurrently and communicate across multiple divisions while keeping senior management informed of any potential issues
- Experience running news apps teams and developers is a major plus
Additional Role Information:
This is a full-time role with a salary range of $165,000-175,000, annually (plus a full benefits package). Salary offered within this range is determined by skills, experience and organizational pay equity. New York Public Radio also offers comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with vacation time, personal days, sick time and parental leave.
This role is based in New York City (or the immediate metro area) and operates in a hybrid capacity. This individual is expected to work onsite at WNYC's Manhattan headquarters at least 3 days a week.
