The Student Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting in the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures. Performs scrub duties and assists the circulating nurse and physician in delivery of patient care. Works under the supervision of the registered nurse and Certified Surgical Technologist. The Surgical Technologist Student positively affects the quality of patient care by functioning as a second scrub, or direct assistant to the physician.
Must be able to demonstrate growth and development knowledge and skills to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Job Duties include the following, other duties may be assigned.
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Certified Surgical Technologist:
- Plans for procedure and prepares surgical suite.
- Provides patient care during the intraoperative /OB procedure by assisting the Certified Surgical Technologist to perform routine duties.
- Creates and maintains a sterile field.
- Provides equipment and supplies based on patient needs.
- Competently performs sponge, sharps, supplies and instruments counts according to P&P.
- Monitors and controls the environment.
- Prepares instruments/supplies in proper manner for sterilization and participates in room cleanup.
Education and Experience Enrolled in a state approved Surgical Technologist program and completion of two semesters of clinical course of study. No experience required.
