The employee identifies and treats health disorders among students and provides instruction in the maintenance of good health and disease prevention. The employee must evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer students to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by this employee require discretionary judgment and analysis. Errors may not be easily discernible and may result in serious impact on the individual child and others. The work of this employee is seldom reviewed while in progress and is performed under general supervision.
The School Nurse is responsible for general acute and chronic nursing service to students in three schools, along with administrative responsibilities.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of training necessary for licensing as a registered nurse, BSN preferred and experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing preferred. Must meet the requirements for certification as a Nationally Certified School Nurse (NCSN) when initial employment and educational requirements are met.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Monitors compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies.
2. Initiates program changes as needed.
3. Prepares health reports for supervisor.
4. Collaborates with other child-support agencies in designing and providing a school health program.
5. Negotiates professional and medical services essential to the school health program.
6. Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services.
7. Maintains security of school health supplies.
8. Serves as a resource person on health issues.
9. Provides staff development on health-related topics for school staff and volunteers.
10. Screens and conducts health appraisals for students and staff.
11. Provides follow-up evaluations on students as required.
12. Recommends corrective action where problems are identified.
13. Conducts home visits when appropriate.
14. Corresponds with parents on health needs of children.
15. Records immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.
MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM RESPONSIBILITIES
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, and a variety of medical equipment and conduct routine medical procedures. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, contracts, policies, handbooks, budgets, etc., using prescribed formats. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape. Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office and medical equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of office machines and medical equipment. Must have minimal level of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment.
2. Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.
3. Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.
4. Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
5. Some knowledge of the school organization and the community served.
6. Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease.
7. Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.
8. Ability to develop and maintain health records on students.
9. Ability to develop positive working relationships.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Full-time for ten (10) months, as funding allows
