Summary:
The Accounting Specialist performs duties to provide accurate and timely payments to vendors for the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. Handles routine filing, incoming calls, mail, and reconciliation of financial reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Verifies accuracy of payment documents and prepares checks for mailing.
  • Processes monthly copier charges.
  • Reviews and processes utilities, child nutrition, and all other invoices for accuracy and proper authorization.
  • Assists in compilation of data for auditors and public information requests.
  • Processes travel advances after reviewing mandatory documents and receipts for accuracy, appropriateness and proper authorization.
  • Maintains accounts payable check files.
  • Researches school and vendor inquiries related to invoices, purchases orders, and travel.
Other Duties:
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
The essential functions for the position of Accounting Specialist include the physical and mental involvement requirements noted in this position description in addition to regular reliable attendance given the limited number of employees available to perform the essential functions of this position. It is also essential that he/she be able to follow the directives of superiors in ensuring the harmonious operation of the department.
Education and Experience:
Minimum Associate's degree required with at least 3 years' experience in a
professional setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret legal and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. The Budget Specialist should be able to respond to inquiries or complaints and communicate effectively to be able to present information to top management, public groups, and the school board.
REASONING ABILITY
Must have an ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must be able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Environment Conditions:
The employee will work in a climate-controlled environment adhering to School Board energy policy and in the outside areas, which are subject to climate extremes. Workday consists of regular central office hours. The length of the workday varies as the result of evening activities or emergencies. In addition, job responsibilities may require work on weekends or holidays and attendance at parent and/or community events.

Breach of said professional conduct includes, but is not limited to, neglect of duty, dishonesty, engagement in acts that are contrary to EBRPSS policy, unlawful activities, or any other conduct which is seriously prejudicial to the school system.
Technological Abilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in general use of a computer, the use of Email as a form of communication, and other job-specific equipment, software, and/or applications.
