Summary The incumbent's principal responsibilities are to perform difficult imaging procedures inclusive of angiography and interventional radiology. Duties would include angiographic studies and interventional procedures (stent placement, angioplasties, thrombolysis, biopsies, drainage systems, etc.).Interventional Radiology procedures are performed in a surgical type setting in the Radiology Service with the Interventional Radiologist or Vascular Surgeon. Major Duties include but not limited to: Technologists may rotate shifts on nights and weekends and holidays without supervision and are responsible for making on the spot decisions regarding patient care and procedures. Technologists may pull on-call duty as required. The incumbent provides direction to personnel and offers advice and guidance in handling unique problems. Regularly sets objectives for self and the department, monitors and evaluates objectives to use time effectively. Coordinates quality improvement activities within the angiography section and recommends areas for review or improvement. Coordinates break/lunch schedules for the section, assuring adequate staffing is available so patient care is not compromised. Works with nursing and other clinical supervisors and supports the maintenance of high-quality patient care. Recommends action to the Supervisor regarding equipment purchases, modifications and construction within the department. Provides technical information when requested. Assists in the planning of new construction projects. Participates in quality assurance/improvement activities and ensure compliance with Joint Commission requirements. Participates in the compilation and analysis of data on departmental activities and prepares related reports to the Supervisor. Serves on Medical Center committees as assigned. Maintains good public relations with patients, doctors, nurses, clerks and technologists. Strives to keep the morale, integrity and ability of the imaging staff as high as achievable. Keeps up with new methods in techniques as they develop here and' elsewhere. Checks all equipment and reports failures to the Supervisor and enters electronic work requests. Operates a Special Procedure Digital Subtraction Angiography System. Develops new techniques, defines optimal protocols, and devises alternative ways to visualize pathology within the patient. Evaluates new system(s) and compares them with existing methodologies. Interacts with physician, scientists, physicist, computer programmers, manufacturers, and technical design engineers on a recurring basis in the performance of daily assignments. Receives patients to include verbal interview for demographic accuracy and patient education prior to procedure, ensuring patient's comfort and relaxation. Positions the patient within the interventional suite, monitors' patient during all phases of appropriate examination(s) and removes patient from the respected system(s) upon completion of the data and/or imaging acquisition(s). The incumbent administers contrast media and medications under the direction and supervision of the staff radiologist(s). Confers with the radiologist(s) to establish requirements with reference to contrast agents, vital signs, medications, and physiological monitoring to perform the procedure(s). The technologist(s) is available to assist and 'scrub with the radiologist during sterile procedures on an as needed basis. Registers patient and procedure(s) in the DHCP System, Radiology Package, and enters case number to case edit the patient's file and indicate that the procedure has been completed. Performs technical and general operation and maintenance of the computer, disk drives, console, imaging devices, etc. Assists manufacturer and biomedical engineers in the calibration and troubleshooting of any malfunctions in all equipment associated with the angiographic system. Ensures compliance with infection control standards and practices and all policies of the VA and Radiology Department. Routinely replenish section stock items/supplies at the end of each shift. Assists physicians and other investigators in the development and execution of research protocols and maintaining the records as necessary to validate the research project or funding grant. In addition, the incumbent assists and develops training programs for general clinical employees. Ensures all images are sent to PACS! Vista Imaging without case editing errors. If errors are discovered, then those will be brought to the attention of the Supervisor and/or PACS personnel to correct without delay. Departmental policy will be adhered to in this regard. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent (can operate independently) and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). NOTE: Assignment to the clinical program director requires meeting JRCERT minimum educational standards as noted in the assignment description. (Transcripts Required) English Language Proficiency: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Creditable Experience: (1) Knowledge of Current Radiologic Technology Practice. To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as clinical competencies) associated with current radiologic technology practice. This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of one year of active practice, which is paid or non-paid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT. (2) Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic certification requirements identified in paragraph 2b above. Experience as a graduate DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed the certification examination. (3) Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a DRT would receive one week of full- time credit for each two weeks of half-time work.
