Job Opening Description
Performs a wide array of duties related to VHF and 800mhz radio communications equipment selection, installation, programming, maintenance, coordination and training of District base, mobile and portable radios. Performs installations, diagnosis, and repairs of apparatus wired and wireless Firecom communication systems. The position also deploys to expanding emergency incidents to support operational requirements as it relates to incident communication needs. Duties also include instructing operations and support staff in proper radio use.
Supervision Received:
Works under the general direction and supervision of the assigned manager (Support Services Officer) who evaluates work for conformance to District policies and effectiveness.
Supervision Exercised:
May direct a junior employee, temporary labor employee in the absence of, or by direction of, manager, Battalion Chief or Division Chief.
Duties and Responsibilities

Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.
  • Continually assesses the District's VHF and 800mhz radio hardware needs and assists in updating the Comms Plan accordingly.
  • Coordinates or performs radio communications equipment maintenance, repairs, programming, flashing and inventory control/accountability.
  • Assist with the interface and coordination with C800, WCCCA and CCOM partner agencies as appropriate to implement and maintain the District's Communications plans.
  • Coordinates and instructs all District employees in the use of all radio systems. Assists in instruction of firefighter(s) in efficient and modern practices and principles of radio communications. Install, maintain, and troubleshoot analog and digital Firecom communications systems found in heavy fire apparatus.
  • Performs housekeeping and maintenance duties at District owned fixed repeater sites as assigned.
  • Manage web-based applications that use District FCC licensed frequencies.
  • Interface and maintain District facilities US Digital Dispatching System (Samantha). Facilitate repairs as needed.
  • Attends schools and classes to learn advanced principles and techniques in use and operation of fire service public safety radio systems. Obtain relevant NWCG certifications and other communications technician certifications.
  • Assists Support Services and Operations Division Chief's in achieving operational communications needs. Helps with building the operational communications plan and facilitates other changes as needed.
  • Must maintain annual District medical clearance.
  • May deploy to expanding alarm incident in support of communications needs.
  • May deploy and staff District Fire Operations Centers during natural and manmade disasters.
  • May serve an internal Incident Management Team position for Communications based on qualifications.
  • Troubleshoots SCBA Bluetooth connectivity and communication issues.
  • Attends District and regional communications task forces, meetings, and committees
  • Works closely with Logistics and Fleet personnel to meet the mission needs in support of the Fire District.
  • Performs other related or unrelated duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maybe placed on standby, or work on an on-call basis with minimal notification.
  • Serves as a joint liaison between CCOM/C800 and the fire district alongside Operations to help troubleshoot issues and establish protocols. Also serves as contact for setting up CAD login for employees.
  • Serves as the employee contact in having the G2 app accounts set up as well as other applicable apps related to dispatch.
  • Serves as a liaison between the HAM radio and CARES group in establishing communication processes for extended emergency situations.
  • Assist IT with the connectivity and radio traffic on the Broadcastify and PulsePoint Apps for the fire district.
  • Maybe called after-hours to provide technical support for communications equipment.

Qualifications
  • Valid Driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • High School diploma, GED, or College Degree
  • 3 years' experience working in public safety installing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing mobile and portable communications equipment
Preferred Requirements
  • Associate of Applied Science degree in electronics or associated field. Relevant years of experience will be considered.
  • Proven skills in repairing, troubleshooting, maintaining, modifying, and installing communications and electronic equipment and related electronics and communications devices.
  • Have knowledge of heavy equipment and vehicle electrical systems, including a multiplex electronic environment as used in complex fire apparatus.
  • The ability to perform and experience with radio installation and wiring in a shop environment, to include troubleshooting connectivity issues and Rx/Tx concerns. Skills in the use of various test equipment, tools, materials and troubleshooting techniques to diagnose and maintain communication components and systems.
  • Must possess a solid understanding of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and CAD interface to remote users and 9-1-1 phone systems. Working knowledge of digital and microprocessor electronics. Must understand theory relating to audio, video, computer, and radio frequency circuits and their applications. Knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations governing communications activities.
  • Possess knowledge of cellular, wireless, and GPS connectivity and interface with CAD system and District devices.
  • The ability to organize multiple tasks and schedules within discrete projects simultaneously with limited supervision.
  • The ability to work calmly in stressful situations with frequent interruptions and to remain calm in emergency situations.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners to troubleshoot problems and identify solutions.
  • Incident Communications Technician through the state and have COML Certificate to assist in internal and state emergencies.
Physical Requirements and Potential Hazards
Per District policy, the position requires a DOT physical. This position also requires frequent exposure to hazards such as extreme temperatures, dust, loud noises, dim lighting, smoke, fumes, chemicals, airborne pathogens and all other hazards encountered in a shop environment. It will also require occasional exposure to inclement weather, blood, and fire, as well as all other environmental adversities that may be encountered in the performance of the essential functions. This position may experience occasional stress due to the requirement to meet identified deadlines while working on specific emergency apparatus or fixed facility equipment.

Additional Information
This is an in-person with a 5/8 schedule from Monday to Friday. The standard working hours are from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. Hybrid work or work from home arrangements are not available for this position.
