Responsibilities:
The Fire Alarm Technician learns and performs a series of tasks in the fire alarm trade by assisting more senior-level trades workers and performs related duties as required or assigned.
Under supervision, the employee assists with installation, modification, maintenance, and repair work on University Fire Alarm systems and equipment to include:
  • Installs, repairs, and inspects smoke and fire suppressions systems; inspects tests, and repairs fire alarm wiring, fire alarm panels and peripheral equipment;
  • Identifies hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair;
  • Inspects, repairs or replaces smoke/heat detectors and sprinkler heads; repairs and tests dry/wet systems; tests fire alarm systems using appropriate diagnostic programs and equipment;
  • Responds to maintenance calls, troubleshooting devices and using device manuals to repair non-functioning fire alarms and restore them to original functionality or replace them if necessary;
  • Performs tests on all basic alarm panel functions to make sure that every offered feature is functional;
  • Ensures that the devices installed meet all local and federal laws and building codes;
  • Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials and keeps it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition;
  • Performs miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting the equipment and mechanical areas;
  • Picks up materials from suppliers when requested. Inspects areas and reports problems to supervisor;
  • Maintains paperwork and electronic communications, including work orders, including recording time;
  • Orders and includes materials on work orders in an expedient manner;
  • Follows established university and departmental policies and procedures; follows established safety procedures and reports accidents and problems to supervisor promptly;
  • Performs assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the fire alarm trade; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. Employee is designated as "Essential Personnel." All essential personnel employees are required to report for snow removal and assist with clearing grounds, roads, pathways, sidewalks or steps.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated experience (generally 2+ years) with the fire alarm trade;
  • Knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices and tools used in the fire alarm trade;
  • Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
  • Skill in the use of tools, equipment, materials pertinent to the trades;
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, diagrams and manufacturers manuals;
  • Aptitude for and interest in the fire alarm trade; and
  • Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of, or ongoing participation and/or completion of courses in vocational or technology education; and
  • Demonstrated progressively more responsible commercial fire alarm experience (3+ years preferred).
